Buddhism was born more than twenty-five centuries ago, originating only in India but gradually spreading to other Asian countries such as China, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Sri Lanka... Wherever Buddhism was transmitted, it was in harmony with the culture and customs of that place, gradually forming different schools, that is the appropriateness and reason of Buddhism. Buddhism, like all other dharmas in the world, cannot be outside the process of "Birth - existence - destruction - emptiness" or "Birth - existence - change - destruction". Buddhism had a time of glorious glory on the Silk Road, and was the main religion in Central Asian countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan... Before Islam dominated these places.
Buddhism's teachings are essentially to enlighten people, to point out the truth of life and the path to liberation. As the Lotus Sutra says: Buddha was born for a great cause and condition, which is to help sentient beings "Open the door to enlightenment and enter the Buddha's knowledge"! Buddhism is a religion of liberation, liberation from the five desires, liberation from false views, liberation from all the bonds that people bind themselves and each other. Around the 11th-12th century, Islam attacked and destroyed all Buddhism in India. Ten thousand monks were killed, Nalanda University and all the temples were destroyed. Buddhism in Central Asia also suffered the same fate! Buddhism in other countries also had many ups and downs throughout history. If it met a wise king and wise ministers, Buddhism developed, but if it met a time of incompetent kings, it was persecuted many times (during the Hong Wu period in China, during the Le Hy Tong period in Vietnam, in modern times there was also a period of destroying temples...)
In Arab countries, Islam is the state religion. They are extremely authoritarian and harsh. They do not accept anything that is different from the Quran. So harsh that: Only their god Allah has a human face. They even tore down statues of other religions. Yet today, a Buddhist temple has sprung up here in Dubai (UAE). This is something unimaginable, unbelievable without a clip of Khalid Al Amei as evidence. There is indeed a Buddhist temple established and propagated here by monks from Sri Lanka. These Sri Lankan monks of the Southern tradition keep their precepts very diligently. In this temple, there is a tall Bodhi tree (originally grafted from a tree in Sri Lanka). The temple is named: MAHAMEVNAWA BUDDHIST MONASTERY. Currently in the UAE (Arab Emirates), there are about five hundred thousand Buddhists, most of whom come from Sri Lanka. They are experts, workers, housekeepers... who come to live and work, and there are also a few locals. Khalid Al Amei went to this temple to make a report and learn about Buddhism. The monks here told him:
- Most of the time we practice and pray in front of the statue of Buddha Shakyamuni (the founder of Buddhism), we practice Vipassana meditation. We offer flowers, lamps, pure water and even food.
Khalid Al Ameri pointed to the paintings on both sides of the main hall and asked, the monks explained that they were disciples of Buddha Shakyamuni. He pointed to the bookcase and was explained: in addition to the scriptures, there are also books teaching the duties of Buddhists, or books talking about the duties of housewives (housekeepers...). Khalid Al Ameri seemed very interested and happy. He mentioned the word tolerance many times!
The temple is a white-painted villa, established in 1999. Currently, there are two monks residing here, they come from Sri Lanka. The two monks keep the precepts very strictly, eat one meal a day, chant in Sinhalese (a language of Sri Lanka), and often preach to Buddhists. On weekdays, Buddhists have to go to work and they often come to the temple on weekends (perhaps like overseas Vietnamese, the temple is not only a place to practice but also a piece of the soul of the homeland for those far from home. The temple is a place for those far from home to return to!)

Currently, the temple is too small compared to the number of Buddhists coming to practice. They are asking the local government for permission to build another temple with a larger scale to accommodate the increasing number of Buddhists. Although the number of Buddhists is large, all practices, activities... are kept discreetly behind two tightly closed gates, everything is extremely gentle and delicate (perhaps to avoid the impulse, the "itchiness" of the natives or extremist elements)
When I watched Khalid Al Ameri's report, I was also very surprised and extremely interested! The desert is inherently harsh, Islam is inherently narrow-minded and conservative... Nature and society have created a fierce personality to the point of being cold and cruel, ready to destroy opponents without mercy. Arabs are very conservative and fanatic, anything that is different from their beliefs, different from the principles of Islam is immediately destroyed. Today's society, although science, technology and civilization are highly developed, still retains old, backward and unreasonable dogmas! Yet a Buddhist temple with hundreds of thousands of Buddhists has appeared in the middle of the capital Dubai. It is unprecedented, no one has ever dared to think of it! This is truly a miracle of the two words tolerance that Khalid Al Ameri has said over and over again! Hopefully the wisdom and compassionate energy from this temple will be like drops of nectar sprinkled on the Arabian desert. Hopefully the wave of compassion will spread in the harsh sun and wind of this Arabian land! The scriptures often compare the lotus flower in the sea of fire (fire turns into red lotus), hopefully the pure lotus flower will radiate light and fragrance to water people's souls.
