In the sutra, the Buddha advised living beings to always maintain a peaceful attitude. If they have caused discord between each other, they must find a way to correct it, lest later that cause will form a great karmic debt. In normal times, people do not resent each other, but suddenly encounter adverse situations and suddenly argue with each other. While arguing, the mind suddenly arises to fight, sue, and even kill each other. Anger is one of the three poisons. Once anger arises, it immediately creates hatred, and revenge never stops, enemies meet and kill each other, starting from small things, and becoming more and more intense.

The Ekang Agama Sutra tells that: Once upon a time, when Buddha Sakyamuni was still alive, he was in the country of Ba La Nai of King Ba Tu Nac. At that time, King Ba Tu Nac wanted to marry the daughter of the Sakya family, so he sent a high-ranking official to Kapilavastu to ask for her hand in marriage. The Sakya clan did not accept this marriage proposal; but because they knew clearly that King Pasenadi was a cruel person, if they refused to marry their daughter to him, he would cause trouble and destroy Kapilavastu. Sakya Ma Ha Nam then thought of a plan, and married the beautiful, virtuous daughter of his slave to King Pasenadi. King Pasenadi was very happy to have such a beautiful girl, and immediately made her his first wife. Not long after, she became pregnant and gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, whom he named Liu Li.

One day, King Pasenadi sent the boy Liu Li to the house of his maternal grandfather, Sakyamuni Ma Ha Nam, in Kapilavastu to learn archery. At that time, the Sakya clan was building a large lecture hall to make offerings to the Buddha and the Bhikkhus. At that time, the boy Liu Li and a number of children entered the lecture hall to play, and then climbed up to sit on the lion throne. The Sakyas were very angry when they saw this. They ran over and grabbed the boy's arm, pulled him down from his seat, and dragged him out the door. They gathered around and scolded him, saying, "This is my son. No one dares to come in here, but this son of mine dares to climb up and sit on the lion throne!" Then someone pushed Liu Li and he fell to the ground. Liu Li stood up, feeling resentful in his heart, and lamented to himself. Then he whispered to his attendant, named Pham Chi Hieu Kho, "The Sakyas have humiliated me like this! If I succeed to the throne in the future, remember to remind me of this."

When King Ba Tu Nac passed away, Prince Liu Li became King. Every time King Liu Li got angry, Hieu Kho would remind him of the past humiliation by the Sakyas, which made King Liu Li even angrier. One time, the King was so angry that he summoned his ministers and ordered them to prepare troops and chariots to march straight to Kapilavastu to conquer the Sakyas. At that time, some Bhikkhus heard the news and immediately went to tell the Buddha. After hearing it, he went to sit cross-legged under a tree by the road where King Vimalakirti would bring his army.

When King Vimalakirti came near and saw the Buddha, he got out of his carriage, walked to where he was sitting, bowed, and said: "There are trees with lush, green leaves, why are you sitting under this dry tree?"

The Buddha replied: "The shade of relatives is much better than that of outsiders."

King Vimalakirti heard what the Buddha said and thought: "Today the World-Honored One is for the sake of relatives, so today I should return and not conquer Kapilavastu again." Having thought this, the King ordered his troops to withdraw.

A while later, Hieu Kho again told the King: "Your Majesty, please remember the past when you were humiliated by the Sakya clan." Hearing this, the King became angry again and ordered his troops to conquer Kapilavastu for the second time. This time too, after the Bhikkhus reported the incident, the Buddha also went to the tree and sat cross-legged. King Vimalakirti saw the Buddha and also bowed to him and said the same as before: "The shade of relatives is better than that of outsiders". At that time, King Vimalakirti thought: "The World-Honored One comes from the Sakya clan, I should not punish him but return", thinking so, the King immediately ordered the army to retreat, and bowed to the Buddha and returned.

War Breaks Out

Some time later, Pham Chi Hieu Kho reminded the King again of the humiliation of the past, after hearing it, the King became angry again, summoned a large army to advance to the country of Kapilavastu. At that time, Venerable Maha Maudgalyayana heard the news and immediately came to inform the Buddha.

The Buddha asked Maha Maudgalyayana: “Can you take their karma to another world?”

After thinking for a few seconds, the Venerable replied: “It is truly impossible to take their karma to another world, but I can take the entire city of Kapilavastu and put it in the void.”

The Buddha said: “Please return to your seat. Can you take the karma of the Sakya clan and put it in the void?”

After thinking for a few seconds, the Venerable replied: “It is impossible. Please allow me to transform a large iron cage to cover the city of Kapilavastu to preserve the lives of the Sakya clan, is that okay?”

The Buddha asked again: “How about Maudgalyayana, can you take an iron cage to cover the karma?”

Venerable Maha Maudgalyayana thought and replied: “It is indeed impossible. body, Venerable World Honored One.”

The Buddha said: “Please return to your seat, today your karma has ripened, you will have to receive retribution.”

Then the Buddha spoke a verse:
“Wanting emptiness to become earth,
To make earth into emptiness,
The place where the karma of old ties,
This karma will not be destroyed.”

After a period of time and many wars broke out, the city of Kapilavastu fell because the Sakya clan only cared about self-defense and did not fight back, even though the army of the Sakya clan was ten times stronger than that of King Vimalakirti. After winning the battle, King Vimalakirti ordered his soldiers to let elephants trample countless Sakyas to death, and also ordered the capture of five hundred beautiful girls for his pleasure.

After the Battle

After the battle, King Vimalakirti killed nine million, nine hundred, ninety thousand (9,990,000) people, blood flowed like rivers, all around Kapilavastu. King Vimalakirti ordered the five hundred Sakya girls to have their limbs cut off and be thrown into a deep pit, because these girls resisted the King's humiliation. When King Vimalakirti had destroyed all of Kapilavastu, he returned to Savatthi to reprimand his son, Prince Jeta, for not helping him fight the Sakyas. Prince Jeta replied: "I heard, but I cannot bear to kill living beings, so I cannot help." King Liu Li heard this and was angry and drew his sword to kill Prince Ky Da!

At that time, the Buddha used his divine eye to see that Ky Da had died and was reborn in the Dao Loi Heaven. He also used his divine ear to hear the girls of the Sakya clan lamenting and complaining. He immediately told the Bhikkhus, the King of the Heavenly Realm Indra, and the Heavenly King Vaisravana to go visit the girls. The Buddha also told the King of the Heavenly Realm Indra to cover the girls' bodies with heavenly clothes, and the Heavenly King Vaisravana brought food to make sure the girls were full. Then the Buddha preached the Dharma to the five hundred girls. The Buddha taught: “All will eventually separate, all will meet and then separate, you should know that the five aggregates of a human being all suffer pain and suffering. All beings must have karma, must have action, so there must be conception, once conceived, one will suffer the consequences of suffering, happiness, sickness, old age, and death. If there were no five aggregates, there would be no more birth, no sickness, no old age, no death, so there would be no meeting, no separation, no suffering.” Then He spoke about suffering, the cause of suffering, the way to end suffering, and the path of practice to escape suffering. Suffering is caused by greed, anger, and ignorance, so it must be abandoned. After hearing this, the girls all had their minds opened, all the impurities of life were eliminated, their minds were pure, each of them passed away in their own place, and were born in heaven. At that time, the Buddha spoke a verse: “All things are impermanent.
If there is birth, there is death.
If there is no birth, there is no extinction.
This extinction is the greatest joy.”

Immediate Retribution

When he returned to the Anathapindika garden, the Buddha told the monks: “King Vimalakirti and his soldiers and followers will not be in this world much longer, after seven days they will be destroyed!” At that time, King Liu Li heard this prophecy from the Buddha and was very afraid. He ordered his ministers to be on guard day and night, to prepare everything, and to be ready to guard against any uncertainties that could happen at any time.

At the beginning of the seventh day, the King was happy to see that nothing happened. He could not hold back any longer, so he brought his soldiers, ministers, and beauties to the banks of the A Chi La River to have fun, and then spent the night there. At midnight, suddenly dark clouds came, followed by a very strong rain and wind. King Liu Li, his soldiers, and ministers were all swept away by the water, and were all destroyed. They died, and they all went to hell! Thunder and lightning caused a fire in the sky, causing Liu Li's palace to burn to ashes!

The Buddha used his Heavenly Eye to see that King Liu Li and his subordinates were swept away by the rain and wind and storm, and were all condemned to Avici Hell. At that time, He spoke a verse:
“The creation of evil is so excessive,
All done by the body and mouth,
This body suffers,
The lifespan is also short.
If one stays in the city,
One will also be burned by the fire,
When the previous life is over,
One will surely be born in hell.”

A Bhikkhu wondered and asked the Buddha: “What karma did the Sakyas create in the past that they are now being harmed so much by King Liu Li?”

The Buddha said: Long ago, in this city of La Duyệt, there was a large village that specialized in fishing. At that time, life was extremely poor, people had to eat tree roots. In that village, there was a large pond with a lot of fish, the villagers all caught fish to eat; in the water there were two types of fish, one called Câu Toa, the other called Lương Thiết (two-tongued). The two leaders of the two fish said to each other: “We have done no wrong to the people in this village, they have caught and eaten our relatives generation after generation, if we have good fortune, we will use it to take revenge later.” Not long after, the two big leaders of the fish were also caught, and there was also an eight-year-old child who did not harm the fish nor catch fish, but when the two leaders of the fish were caught, the child saw it and was happy. You Masters should know, you should not think that the people of La Duyệt city at that time were people, now they are the people of the Thích family, the leader of the fish Câu Táo is now the Lưu Ly King, the fish Lương Thiết is now Phạm Chí Hiếu Khổ. The child who saw the two leaders of the fish being caught and laughed at that time is now me. The people of La Duyệt city at that time ate fish, now they are suffering this revenge, and I am happy and now I have a headache. Because the Tathagata did not receive a reincarnation, he has overcome all dangers, you Masters should guard your actions from body, mouth, and mind. Teachers should learn this.
