To The Zen Master I Owe So Much
Poems by Zen Master Thich Thanh Tu
Translated by Nguyen Giac
Zen Master Thich Thanh Tu will turn 95 years old on July 24, 2019. To compose a birthday greeting, I would like to translate some of his poems to express my indebtedness to him, the Zen Master who's revived the Zen school founded by King Tran Nhan Tong.
I've read so many Zen books translated and written by Zen Master Thich Thanh Tu. Those Zen books gave me a lot of knowledge and inspiration. Dear Zen Master Thich Thanh Tu, you are the only person who can revive the Truc Lam Zen School -- and you did it, perfectly and superbly. Though I am a student from another Zen school, I admire you and owe you so much.
Respectfully Presented to the Zen Master I Am Deeply Grateful For
Zen Master Thich Thanh Tu will turn 95 on July 24, 2019. To prepare my birthday greetings, I respectfully translate a few of your poems to express my gratitude to you, the Zen Master who revived the Zen sect founded by King Tran Nhan Tong.
I have read many Zen books that you translated and lectured on. These Zen books have given me much knowledge and inspiration. Dear Zen Master Thich Thanh Tu, you are the only one who can revive the Truc Lam Zen sect – and you have done so perfectly and wonderfully. Although I learned from another Zen sect, I admire you and owe you a lot.
LIFE THROUGH MY EYES
The body of the four elements is just smoke,
Worldly activities are like clouds.
Success, just an ice cube,
Failure, just a melting foam.
Shame and glory are bubbles,
Love and hate are drops of morning dew.
Suffering and happiness are in a dream
Fame and wealth are like flying birds.
Months and days are like the blink of an eye,
The water and the moon are like swaying waves.
In the end, a breeze blows,
The sky is full of clear light.

LIFE THROUGH MY EYES
The four-element bodies are just smoke
Worldly things, just clouds
Success, just an ice cube
Failure, just melting froth
Honor and dishonor, just water bubbles
Love and hate, just morning dewdrops
Suffering and pleasure, just dreams
Fame and wealth, just the shadow of a flying bird
Months and days, just a blink of eyes
Gain and loss, just moonlight on wavering water
The end of life, just a breeze of wind
Complete Enlightenment, the clear vast sky.

DREAM
Holding on to a dream,
Wandering through the dream.
The dream is gone,
Laughing at the broken dream.
Recording the dream's words,
Sending a message to the dreamer.
Knowing the dream,
Waking up from the dream.
--- Zen Master Thich Thanh Tu
DREAMS
Leaning on your body in dreams
you wander for sightseeing in dreams
When the dreams fade away
your laughter will shatter all dreams
Now I mark words in dreams
sending to travelers in dreams
just discern the dreams
and awake from dreams.

BREAKING THE EGO
Life is in the breath
In the heartbeat
What is life?
A continuous borrowing.
--- Zen Master Thich Thanh Tu
BREAK THE SO-CALLED SELF
Your life is as short as a breath
and as fragile as a heartbeat
Thus, what is life?
Things are borrowed for temporary use endlessly.

IF YOU KNOW
If you know, life is like that,
There is nothing to worry about in your heart.
Who laughed happily last year,
Who is suffering this month,
Who has a lot of money,
Who has a bowl of rice that is hard to fill,
Who is at the peak of glory,
Who is humiliated with nothing?
Life just flows, flows forever,
Years carry away, take away human life.
Who is there, who tries to hold on,
If anything, only a grave remains!
The autumn lake has clear water,
The moon appears brightly.
Children race to scoop it up,
No matter how many they scoop, they are empty-handed.
Stop being naive,
Look up at the clear sky.
Oh my! The moon is bright on a lonely night,
It's gone, the hard work of searching for it.
Now I see the moon, the bright moon,
No longer trembling and diving to find the moon!
If you knew, life is like that,
Nothing would bother your heart.
--- Zen Master Thich Thanh Tu
IN CASE YOU KNOW
In case you know such is life
nothing could cling in your mind
Who laughed joyfully in bygone years
Who suffered and pained this month
Who had wealth beyond the dream of avarice
Who were flat broke and hungry
Who got the highest achievement
Who were put in shame and dragged in the mud
The river of life flows and flows forever
Years and months sweep away human life
Where are those who tried to grasp on life
Only their tombs are seen here now.
When the lake water is clear in autumn
the underwater moon appears and shines
The youths tried to scoop out the image
and ended up empty-handed
Do not be naïve anymore
Just look up at the sky.
Oh! The moon shines bright in the still of the night
ending your tiredness in the exhaustive search
The bright moon is seen now
ending your hard days of diving to seek it
In case you know such is life
nothing can cling to your mind.
