(The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.)Albert Einstein

Văn học Phật giáo - Thiền sư Huyền Quang

Font chữ:

Zen Master Huyen Quang's world name was Ly Dao Tai, born in the year of Giap Dan 1254, from Van Tai village, Lang Giang route (now Gia Binh district, Bac Ninh province). His family was poor, but from a young age he showed his intelligence and good study. Later, he passed both the provincial and municipal exams, becoming the First Class Doctor (first place winner), he was appointed to work in the Imperial Academy (Han Lam Vien) of the royal court, receiving Chinese envoys, and was famous for his outstanding poetry and literature.

Later, he gave up all titles and positions, disregarded fleeting fame and fortune, refused even the job of being the son-in-law of King Anh Tong, determined to become a monk to seek the Way and practice Zen, and served the Emperor Tran Nhan Tong. When the Second Patriarch Phap Loa passed the robe and bowl to him, he became the third patriarch of the Truc Lam Yen Tu Zen sect.

At the age of 77, he passed the robe and bowl to National Master An Tam, and retired to a meditation room to recuperate. Three years later, in the year of Giap Tuat 1334, he passed away at the age of 80. After the Master's death, King Tran Minh Tong ordered the construction of the Patriarch's Tower behind Con Son Pagoda, called Huyen Quang Tower, or "Dang Minh Bao Thap".

Not only a Zen master, Huyen Quang the Third Patriarch was also an artist with a liberal soul, a great poet with many poems imbued with Buddhist teachings. His life was full of mysterious and unusual colors, with fascinating and thrilling stories that became legends included in history books, legends and even the stage later, most notably the anecdote related to the talented and beautiful Royal Concubine Diem Bich.

His works are numerous, but to this day, only 24 Zen poems remain in the collection "Phu Tu Vinh Van Yen".

I would like to take the liberty of praising the life and virtue of propagating the Dharma of the Third Patriarch with a six-eight verse:

The Third Patriarch's Y Bat Inheritance
From the hands of the Second Patriarch was Huyen Quang
Born in Van Tai village - Lang Giang
The first ancestor of the Ly family was an official for many generations
Mother was Le Thi who loved people
At the age of thirty, she prayed to Heaven for a son
During an epidemic and natural disaster
Goed up the mountain to pick medicinal herbs, rested at the temple
While sleeping, the wind blew
Saw a big monkey playing in the yard
Clinging to the red sun
Threw it straight into my heart... conceived;
Adding a second miracle
Zen master Hue Nghia looked after the village temple
The temple was named Ngoc Hoang
While meditating in a dreamy dream
Suddenly, the torches were brightly lit
The dragon god and Dharma protector appeared in full force
Buddhas and Bodhisattvas descended to earth
The message: "Venerable Ananda entered the world
Reincarnated into a human life
Promoting the Dharma immediately in the Eastern world!"
Startled, his heart was light and airy
The Zen master was delighted, secretly waiting for the news...
That year, Le Thi gave birth
After twelve months, a beautiful child was born
A noble son with a different appearance
As a child, he heard one thing and understood ten strange things
The master's spirit
Supernatural and outstanding, revealing his natural talent
Mother chose two words
Name Dao Tai, which sounded like a god
Says: family circumstances were difficult
Encountered many marital difficulties because of poverty
Some criticized, some refused, haggling
Mother was sad and carried many worries worry,
Studying, sometimes hungry, sometimes full
Students study hard, cook history, go to the exam
Trang Nguyen - Doctorate passed immediately
People crowded around to tell the teacher
Seeing the world's nobility, people tried to grab it
Marriage matchmaking, love affairs were tangled
"No one looked at the difficulties
Until he passed the exam, eight thousand causes and conditions!"
Anh Tong wanted to choose a good son-in-law
Having a sincere heart, he refused and passed on the old books
Not interested in marrying the King's wife and children
Clearly, the Saint laughed at the world
Trang Nguyen was appointed as an official
He entered the high Academy of Sciences
From here, he followed orders and went in and out
Received the envoy without wavering
The Chinese envoy had already met
Poetry and language flowed freely
His voice resounded like a bell
Excellent meaning, extraordinary literature
The Chinese envoy respected and admired
Fame spread far and wide, famous famous virtue...
Fate brought him once
Following the King to listen to the Dharma, he was close to Phap Loa
From the stone veins blossomed flowers
Realizing the previous fate, he released his heart's intention:
"Being an official, he was able to go to Bong Island
Pho Da attained enlightenment, then he wished to return...
Wealth and honor, white clouds in summer
Honor and glory like fallen autumn leaves
Dreaming and longing stopped
The Western Paradise, the Buddha's land, is a place of eternity!"
Returning, anxious and wistful
Resigned to the King several times
Became a monk and received precepts at the temple
Followed the King to learn and practice meditation
Residing at Van Yen mountain temple
Opened a school to teach the famous Huyen Quang
Thousands of disciples gathered
To listen to the Master's profound teachings
All the science and education had to go through his hands
Compiled, approved, and edited fully, and was well-read
The King invited him to preach the Dharma many times
Royal children Paying homage, the prince bowed his head...
Returning to his hometown to repay the deep gratitude
Dai Bi Thien Tu was inaugurated long ago
First, he took care of his parents
Then, he spread Buddhism to his old village...
Throughout the years of sunshine and rain
Favorable and adverse circumstances, he never wavered
Green stone or pure gold
Minh Tong wanted to test it once to see if it was true
An old story has been passed down to this day:
Concubine Diem Bich approached the Master in the middle of the night
The King ordered him to bring evidence back
One was Dai Giac, the other was a common man
Diem Bich harmed the monk
Immediately used a cruel plan to have the King judge him
The injustice and karmic obstacles were here
Bearing a bad reputation with the dirty world
The golden lotus sat in the mud
The Zen master was at ease between doubt and suspicion
Held the altar to give alms for one day
Great supernatural powers swept away the dust of the world
Shocking the hearts of the king and his ministers
Understood the evil plan Concubine harms monk
Miraculously protects monk
Evil people receive punishment to sweep the inner palace temple...
Only then do we know that Buddhism is infinite
Huyền Quang leaves behind the fragrant lotus flower,
Buddha's mind of Compassion, Wisdom and Courage
The pure and solemn world of Ta Bà is immense
For many years, my heart has been sent to the Zen door
Dedicated to the Dharma, sowing affinity with the World
“Pho Tue Ngu Luc” many pages
“Ngoc Tien Thi Tap”, “Cong Van” left behind
“Chu Pham Kinh” saves people
What a pity that the original is lost in madness...
“Phu Tu Vinh Van Yen” still remains
Twenty-four Zen poems are still passed on
The high mountains of Côn Sơn- Tư Phúc
Thanh Mai is quiet and deeply imprinted with His image
Lien Hoa Cuu Pham dharma platform
The virtue and talent of the Zen Master still remain
The soul of an artist in poetry and literature
Free and unrestrained, the mind seems to be wandering
But no dirt on the world
Peaceful and free from the near and far
Choosing the day to display the robe and bowl
Passing on the heart seal, Phap Loa chose
The Third Patriarch was the One
Inheriting the torch of wisdom to light up the turbulent world
The Yen Tu Zen sect was fragrant
Leading the Church to continue the path of saving lives...
Old age and weak health
At seventy-seven years old, he had to transfer
The responsibility entrusted to him wherever
The National Master was there, coming and going with Peace of Mind...
In the first month of the year, Giap Tuat, the year of the Dog
Giving up the body of the five aggregates, he whisked away
Minh Tong gave him the title
"Tu Phap Ton Gia" which will last forever...
