However, for Saints, meeting a thief is an interesting thing.
The following story of how wise men converted thieves brings us a lot of emotions.

When Bodhisattva Nagarjuna practiced, his life was extremely simple, his only property was a bowl. But he was a genius with unparalleled wisdom, even the noble king, queen or people of status and power were all his students.

There was a queen who greatly respected Zen Master Nagarjuna, and specially made a precious bowl for him. When the monk Nagarjuna brought the porcelain bowl to the palace, the queen said to him: “I want you to do something for me.”

Zen master Nagarjuna said: “I have nothing on me except this bowl, what do you want me to do?”

The queen said: “I want that bowl.”

He said: “Yes, then please take it.”

The queen said: “That’s not all, I want to exchange my bowl for you, please take this bowl.” The monk replied: “No problem, any bowl will do.”

He was completely unaware that the queen had secretly given him a precious golden bowl. On his way back, he stopped at a ruined temple. Before that, a thief discovered the precious bowl in the hands of Zen Master Nagarjuna, so he followed him into the temple.

The temple had only four walls left, no roof, everything was in ruins. There was a window on the wall, and the thief was hiding outside to spy. He knew that Buddhist monks only ate one meal a day, so he calculated: “I will wait until he is full and asleep, then I can make a move, that is the most suitable time. Moreover, this temple has been abandoned for many years, not a single person is there, it is very convenient.”

After Zen Master Nagarjuna finished eating, he threw the bowl out the window right where the thief was hiding. The thief could not believe his eyes: “How could there be such a person? After eating, he threw away this precious bowl, or is this bowl worthless?”

So the thief stood up and asked: “Can I come in and ask you a few questions?”.

Zen Master Nagarjuna said: “Young man, to bring you in here, I had to throw the bowl out there! Come in, I gave you that bowl, so you are not a thief, it is my gift. I am a poor man with nothing but this bowl, I also know that I cannot keep it for long, because when I sleep someone will take it. You did not mind the trouble to follow me from the capital here, I already knew that. The summer weather is very hot, please do not refuse my gift!”.

The thief said: “You are so strange, don't you know that this bowl is very precious?”

Zen Master Nagarjuna said: “After I realized the truth of life, everything else is no longer valuable!”.

The thief looked at Nagarjuna and said: “Then please tell me I know, what truth have you realized that is more valuable than this golden bowl?

Zen Master Nagarjuna replied: “A very simple thing!”

The thief said: “Before you say anything, let me introduce myself, I am a famous thief.”

The Zen Master said: “Who wouldn’t be like that, don’t worry about those trivial things! Because people are born empty-handed, and later get a lot of things from others, everyone is a thief, so don’t worry. No matter what you do, it doesn’t matter, as long as you do it well, and remember: When you steal other people’s things, think about their feelings. If you can’t consider other people’s feelings, then don’t steal it. It’s just that simple a principle!”

The thief said: “This is too easy. But will I be able to see you again in the future?”

Zen Master Nagarjuna He said, “I will stay here for more than ten days. You can come any time, but first you must do as I say.”

The thief tried this for ten days, and he found that it was the most difficult thing in the world. There were times when he wanted to steal things, but when he thought about other people's feelings, his desire to steal things disappeared. Even when he went to steal in the palace, when he opened the drawers full of gold and silver treasures, he was not thinking about anything, but he remembered his promise, so he did not steal anything anymore.

In the end, he did not steal anything, so he went to see Zen Master Nagarjuna and said: “My life has been turned upside down by you. Now I cannot steal anything.”

Nagarjuna replied: “The problem is with you, not with me. If you want to return to your old profession, then forget your feelings.”

The thief said again: “But those moments were very precious. I have never been as free as I am today in my life, peaceful, quiet, happy, even the treasures in the kingdom cannot compare. Now I understand the meaning of your saying ‘after understanding the truth, everything else is worthless’. I have tasted the flavor of the nectar, and I think You are immersed in it every moment. Can you accept me as your disciple and let me follow you?”

Zen Master Nagarjuna said: “Indeed, every moment I am contemplating the truth. When you first followed me, I wanted to influence you to become my disciple. At that time, you wanted to steal my golden bowl, but I wanted to keep your mind. Our actions were coincidental but miraculously coincided.”
