We have explained the twelve members of dependent arising in terms of one round, starting from ignorance with the remaining eleven members coming out of that. But you have to say that at the time this dependent arising operates, there's another dependent arising operating with it. For when you have ignorance, action, and consciousness, between consciousness and name and form you have to have the attachment, grasping and existence in order to activate the potency in the consciousness for it to produce the lifetime indicated by name and form. The level of fully potentialized karma leads to birth, and at the same time there will be another set of name and form, sources and contact, operating. This is in terms of considering the twelve as one round.

If attachment, grasping and existence must come between consciousness and name and form there's another round involved even in their production. Once the first member is ignorance and the last member is aging and death, it might seem as if there were a beginning and end, but when you realize that in order to bring about this one round of the twelve member dependent arising there are other rounds operating at the same time, you realize that there isn't a clean beginning and end. The root of all of it is ignorance and as long as you have ignorance, there's nothing you can do about getting rid of this process.

With regard to the twelve members dependent arising of a lifetime in a bad transmigration, there is the basic ignorance which is obscuration with respect to the mode of being of phe-nomena, and there is also ignorance which is obscuration with regard to the relation between actions and their effects. Through that, a non-virtuous action is produced that deposits a potency in the consciousness, which serves as the projecting cause. The projecting cause is actualized by attachment, grasping and existence, due to which the effects of suffering in a bad transmigration are produced.

As for the dependent arising of a lifetime of high status within cyclic existence, the basic ignorance is the same, it is obscuration with respect to the mode of subsistence of phenomena, but it is virtuous action that deposits a potency in the consciousness. That projecting cause is nourished by attachment, grasping and existence, such that it produces the effect of a lifetime in high status.

When one reflects on this mode of wandering in cyclic existence by way of these twelve members of dependent arising in relation to others, one's compassion towards them is increased. There are vast methods of meditation on these twelve members in terms of oneself, developing a wish to get out of cyclic existence, and in terms of others, thereby developing increasing compassion.

So that is the mode of dependent arising in terms of the twelve members of the development of a lifetime in cyclic existence.
