Hi this is vocabulary lesson for the race. Let's go through the story slowly and talk about some of the vocabularies. Alright, The race.
It's 5 0'clock and Allen, Allen is the name, of course, is riding his motorcycle in San Francisco. He is riding down Van Ness street. Van Ness is also the name, of course. And we also say riding down, we sometimes say, you know He is going up the street or he is going down the street and sometimes that mean maybe going up a hill or down a hill. Sometimes it mean North and South. He is going up the street. It may suggest He is going North street. We say go down Van Ness, it make mean go South on Van Ness, or it make mean go down a hill. So that why we say sometimes to go up or go down a street. Here is mean going down a hill van Ness as a big hill. And Allen is at a top of the hill and he is riding down Van Ness street and he comes to a stoplight. Stoplight is traffic light, of course, green, yellow and red. Sometime we say traffic light but sometimes we say traffic light, are the same, it both same Ok! A red Ferrari pulls up next to him. Ferrari is the name of the car, of course. Ferrari is very fast car. Immediately, Ferrari, I think most of you probably know what a Ferrari is. Pulls up next to him, to pull up next to someone. It's the idea you come next to them, you was behind them and then you come next to them. So you can imagine someone is at a stoplight and another car comes from behind and then comes and stops next to you or next to the person. We say: they pull up next to you or pull up next to person. It's idea coming from behind to the side of someone. So a red Ferrari pulls up next to Allen, come from behind Allen and stops next to him.
The driver is wearing dark sun glasses.
The driver of Ferrari is wearing dark sun glasses. He looks over at Allen... ..To look over at, It's idea that you look to the side, you are looking side way, not frond of you. If you say look over, you are not looking to the frond, you are looking to a side, alright so next to each other and then they look to a side driver turn his head to a side and look at Allen. So that is the idea of to look over at someone. That is idea of looking to a side.
Allen looks at him. Allen looks at to driver and realizes that the driver is Tom Cruise.... That driver, Tom Cruise is driver of Ferrari. Tom Cruise looks over at Allen turn in his side and looks at Allen. Tom sneers at Allen, Sneer, to sneer, to sneer mean to move the your mouth and look, kind of angry, it's mean, it's maybe mean only side of your mouth go up, kind of they have smile. So maybe the left side of your mouth go up but the right side doesn't move. It's kind of half smile. We call that sneering or to sneer, and to sneer it usually mean the person is angry or the person doesn't like you. It's negative thing to sneer. Ok. Tom sneers at Allen and he says when the light turn green let's race. Tom Cruise want to race, Allen on the motorcycle. Tom has Ferrari car. Allen has a motorcycle. Tom want to race. Allen says "Alright, you're on". You're on mean I agree with you or it mean I will do it. I'll do that you say. I agree to do something. Usually we use you're on for a contest, for competition or something where one person will win and another will lose. For example a race some kind of difficult thing, for example. If you say AJ I will give you $100 if you swim 10 miles and I say you're on. It means I agree to do it. So in this story Allen agrees to race Tom. He agrees to do it. He says you're on.
And Tom says "I'll smoke you sucka"... This is slang of course, gonna mean is going to, future tense. We just say gonna is normal speech . I don't say going to, we say gonna. This is I'm going to smoke, I gonna to smoke you. To smoke someone is slang, it mean beat them, it mean to win against someone. So you wish a future a lot. I gonna smoke you. I'm going to beat you. I'm going to win and you're going to lose. That want to smoke someone means. Specially in the race we use a lot in racing I gonna smoke you mean I'll be faster I'll beat you. And then sucka,... sucka too pronunciation suker or sucka.
That is just means...... . . a regative name for somebody. Sucka is kind of which it not it.... negative.... Not so much. Sucka is the little bit negative, not terrible. Tom is negatives . I gonna smoke you sucka. Allen says "you wish" meaning you won smoke me. The Allen says I gonna beat you and sorry-ass car. Sorry-ass is also slang. Sorry-ass car, sorry ass problem sorry as mean terrible cheap, slow quality, not good. We say sorry-ass, Allen says, Tom, your ca is nothing your car is bad car and cheap, your car is slow quality, it is sorry ass car. Alright, the next... Allen and Tom wait at the light, they rev their engines.
To rev their engines, engines is modem for a car or motorcycle, to rev means to ZZZZum. It's a power for a car , It's a power for a motorcycle , rev means to rum rum That revving their engines right. You push the engines go fast but you are not moving. They pushing they get zum zum.. but you also push a break. No moving that call revving. The engines, revving their engines. You make a engines loud run... Tom is revving the engines of the Ferrari zum zum. Allen is revving the engines of his motorcycle ZUM ZUM..and they are waiting for the light. Suddenly the light turn green Allen and Tom take off. Ok to take off, to take off means to start quickly. It means to go quickly or start very quickly. Do to take off wwe use this for example when someone stopped not moving and suddenly they move, suddenly they go. We say they take off. To take off is suddenly move or to suddenly start. So they take off when light turn green. Tom suddenly start and moves his car and Allen suddenly go on his motorcycle. He takes off on his motorcycle. Ok. Take off has other means also but here it's mean start suddenly. Ok. They zoom down Van Ness street at top speed. To zoom means to go fast easy to go very fast, zoom , to zoom. He zoomed down the road, he went fast down the road so they zoom go very fast down Van Ness at top speed. Top speed means as fast as possible, it means fastest. Ok. They zoom go, they go fast down Van Ness street. Tom Cruise is winning. But suddenly, blue and red light appear behind Tom. It's the police. They pull him over. To pull someone over, we use this phrase with the police when you're driving and the police come behind you. They turn on the light Then you must go over to a side, you must stop your car. We say the police pull him over or the police pull you over. To pull over with the police mean the police stop your car, alright they pull you over. So Tom is going very fast the police come behind Tom and they pull him over, tom must stop. Allen zooms pass Tom laughing. He yells "Better luck next time". Better luck next time means you fail but hope next time you will do it better. It same to be get good luck better luck next time. It similar to good luck. With a difference better luck next time. We use after someone fail after something bad happen we say oh better luck next time. It means this time you fail but next time maybe you will success next time. Maybe you will do it better. So we say better luck next time, alright. And finally lesson Allen is the winner. Allen is the winner. Ok. That it's all of the vocabulary lesson for The Race.
