Setting at Savatthi.

Then, in the morning, the bhikkhuni Soma dressed and, taking bowl and robe, entered Savatthi for alms.

Rồi Tỷ-kheo-ni Som� v�o buổi s�ng đắp y, cầm y b�t, đi v�o S�vatthi để khất thực.

When she had walked for alms in Savatthi and had returned from her alms round, after her meal she went to the Blind Men's Grove for the day's abiding. Having plunged into the Blind Men's Grove, she sat down at the foot of a tree for the day's abiding.

Khất thực ở S�vatthi xong, sau bữa ăn, tr�n con đường khất thực trở về, Tỷ-kheo-ni đi đến rừng Andha để nghỉ ban ng�y. Sau khi đi s�u v�o rừng, n�ng ngồi dưới một gốc c�y để nghỉ ban ng�y.

Then Mara the Evil One, desiring to arouse fear, trepidation, and terror in the bhikkhuni Soma, desiring to make her fall away from concentration, approached her and addressed her in verse:

�c ma muốn l�m Tỷ-kheo-ni Som� run sợ, hoảng sợ, l�ng t�c dựng ngược, muốn n�ng từ bỏ Thiền định, liền đi đến Tỷ-kheo-ni Som�; sau khi đến, n�i l�n b�i kệ với Tỷ-kheo-ni Som�:

That state so hard to achieve
Which is to be attained by the seers,
Can't be attained by a woman
With her two-fingered wisdom.

Địa vị kh� chứng đạt,
Chỉ Th�nh nh�n chứng đạt,
Tr� nữ nh�n hai ng�n,
Sao hy vọng chứng đạt?

Then it occurred to the bhikkhuni Soma: "Now who is this that recited the verse � a human being or a non-human being?"

Tỷ-kheo-ni Som� suy nghĩ: "Ai đ� n�i b�i kệ n�y? Người hay kh�ng phải người?"

Then it occurred to her: "This is Mara the Evil One, who has recited the verse desiring to arouse fear, trepidation, and terror in me, desiring to make me fall away from concentration."

Tỷ-kheo-ni Som� suy nghĩ: "Đ�y l� �c ma muốn l�m cho ta run sợ, hoảng sợ, l�ng t�c dựng ngược, muốn ta từ bỏ Thiền định, n�n đ� n�i l�n b�i kệ đ�".

Then the bhikkhuni Soma, having understood, "This is Mara the Evil One," replied to him in verses:

Tỷ-kheo-ni Som� biết được : "Đ�y l� �c ma", liền n�i l�n b�i kệ với �c ma:

What does womanhood matter at all
When the mind is concentrated well,
When knowledge flows on steadily
As one sees correctly into Dhamma.
One to whom it might occur,
'I'm a woman' or 'I'm a man'
Or 'I'm anything at all' �
Is fit for Mara to address.

Nữ t�nh chướng ngại g�,
Khi t�m kh�o Thiền định,
Khi tr� tuệ triển khai,
Ch�nh qu�n ph�p vi diệu?
Ai tự m�nh t�m hỏi :
"Ta, nữ nh�n, nam nh�n,
Hay ta l� ai kh�c?"
Xứng n�i chuyện �c ma,
�c ma thật c�n xứng.

Then Mara the Evil One, realizing, "The bhikkhuni Soma knows me," sad and disappointed, disappeared right there.

�c ma biết được: "Tỷ-kheo-ni Som� đ� biết ta", n�n buồn khổ, thất vọng, liền biến mất tại chỗ ấy.
