Như vầy t�i nghe.

On one occasion, when the Blessed One was newly Self-awakened, he was staying at Uruvela on the bank of the Nerañjara River, at the foot of the Goatherd's Banyan Tree.

Một thời Thế T�n ở tại Uruvel� tr�n bờ s�ng Neranjar�, dưới gốc c�y Ajap�la Nigrodha, khi Ng�i mới th�nh đạo.

Then, while he was alone and in seclusion, this line of thinking arose in his awareness: "One suffers if dwelling without reverence or deference. Now on what priest or contemplative can I dwell in dependence, honoring and respecting him?"

V� Thế T�n trong khi Thiền tịnh độc cư, tư tưởng sau đ�y được khởi l�n: "Thật l� kh� khăn, sống kh�ng c� cung k�nh, kh�ng c� v�ng lời. Vậy Ta h�y cung k�nh, t�n trọng v� sống y chỉ v�o một Sa-m�n hay B�-la-m�n".

Then the thought occurred to him: "It would be for the sake of perfecting an unperfected aggregate of virtue that I would dwell in dependence on another priest or contemplative, honoring and respecting him. However, in this world with its devas, Maras, & Brahmas, in this generation with its priests and contemplatives, its royalty and common-folk, I do not see another priest or contemplative more consummate in virtue than I, on whom I could dwell in dependence, honoring and respecting him.

Rồi Thế T�n, suy nghĩ: "Với mục đ�ch l�m cho đầy đủ giới uẩn chưa được đầy đủ, Ta h�y cung k�nh, t�n trọng v� sống y chỉ v�o một Sa-m�n hay B�-la-m�n kh�c. Nhưng Ta kh�ng thấy một chỗ n�o trong thế giới chư Thi�n, �c ma v� Phạm thi�n, giữa c�c Sa-m�n, giữa quần ch�ng lo�i Trời hay lo�i Người, kh�ng c� một vị Sa-m�n hay B�-la-m�n n�o kh�c,với giới uẩn cụ t�c, tốt đẹp hơn Ta m� Ta c� thể cung k�nh, t�n trọng v� sống y chỉ".

"It would be for the sake of perfecting an unperfected aggregate of concentration that I would dwell in dependence on another priest or contemplative, honoring and respecting him. However, in this world with its devas, Maras, & Brahmas, in this generation with its priests and contemplatives, its royalty and common-folk, I do not see another priest or contemplative more consummate in concentration than I, on whom I could dwell in dependence, honoring and respecting him.

Nhưng Ta kh�ng thấy một chỗ n�o trong thế giới chư Thi�n, �c ma v� Phạm thi�n, giữa c�c Sa-m�n, giữa quần ch�ng lo�i Trời hay lo�i Người, kh�ng c� một vị Sa-m�n hay B�-la-m�n n�o kh�c,với giới uẩn cụ t�c, tốt đẹp hơn Ta m� Ta c� thể cung k�nh, t�n trọng v� sống y chỉ".

Nhưng Ta kh�ng thấy một chỗ n�o trong thế giới chư Thi�n, �c ma v� Phạm thi�n, giữa c�c Sa-m�n, giữa quần ch�ng lo�i Trời hay lo�i Người, kh�ng c� một vị Sa-m�n hay B�-la-m�n n�o kh�c,với giới uẩn cụ t�c, tốt đẹp hơn Ta m� Ta c� thể cung k�nh, t�n trọng v� sống y chỉ".

However, in this world with its devas, Maras, & Brahmas, in this generation with its priests and contemplatives, its royalty and common-folk, I do not see another priest or contemplative more consummate in knowledge and vision of release than I, on whom I could dwell in dependence, honoring and respecting him.

"What if I were to dwell in dependence on this very Dhamma to which I have fully awakened, honoring and respecting it?"

"Với ph�p n�y, Ta đ� ch�nh đẳng gi�c, Ta h�y cung k�nh, t�n trọng v� sống y chỉ ph�p n�y".

Then, having known with his own awareness the line of thinking in the Blessed One's awareness — just as a strong man might extend his flexed arm or flex his extended arm — Brahma Sahampati disappeared from the Brahma-world and reappeared in front of the Blessed One.

Rồi Phạm thi�n Sahampati với t�m tư của m�nh biết được t�m tư của Thế T�n, như một nh� lực sĩ duỗi c�nh tay đang co lại, hay co lại c�nh tay đang duỗi ra; cũng vậy, vị ấy biến mất ở Phạm thi�n giới v� hiện ra trước mặt Thế T�n.

Arranging his upper robe over one shoulder, he saluted the Blessed One with his hands before his heart and said to him:

Rồi Phạm thi�n Sahamapati đắp thượng y v�o một b�n vai, chấp tay hướng đến Thế T�n v� bạch Thế T�n:

"So it is, Blessed One! So it is, One-Well-Gone! Those who were Arahants, Rightly Self-awakened Ones in the past — they, too, dwelled in dependence on the very Dhamma itself, honoring and respecting it. Those who will be Arahants, Rightly Self-awakened Ones in the future — they, too, will dwell in dependence on the very Dhamma itself, honoring and respecting it. And let the Blessed One, who is at present the Arahant, the Rightly Self-awakened One, dwell in dependence on the very Dhamma itself, honoring and respecting it."

Như vậy l� phải, bạch Thế T�n! Như vậy l� phải, bạch Thiện Thệ! Bạch Thế T�n, trong thời qu� khứ, c�c vị A-la-h�n, Ch�nh Đẳng Ch�nh Gi�c, chư Thế T�n ấy cung k�nh, t�n trọng v� sống y chỉ v�o (Ch�nh) ph�p. Bạch Thế T�n, trong thời vị lai, c�c vị ấy sẽ th�nh A-la-h�n, Ch�nh Đẳng Ch�nh Gi�c, chư Thế T�n ấy sẽ cung k�nh, t�n trọng v� sẽ sống y chỉ v�o (Ch�nh) ph�p. Bạch Thế T�n, mong rằng trong thời hiện tại, Thế T�n, bậc A-la-h�n, Ch�nh Đẳng Ch�nh Gi�c cũng cung k�nh, t�n trọng v� sống y chỉ v�o (Ch�nh) ph�p.

That is what Brahma Sahampati said. Having said that, he further said this:

Phạm thi�n Sahampati n�i như vậy, sau khi n�i như vậy, lại n�i th�m như sau:

Past Buddhas,
future Buddhas,
& he who is the Buddha now,
removing the sorrow of many —
all have dwelt,
will dwell, he dwells,
revering the true Dhamma.
This, for Buddhas, is a natural law.
Therefore one who desires his own good,
aspiring for greatness,
should respect the true Dhamma,
recollecting the Buddhas' Teaching.

Chư Phật thời qu� khứ,
Chư Phật thời vị lai,
V� đức Phật hiện tại,
Đoạn sầu muộn nhiều người.
Tất cả c�c vị ấy,
Đ�, đang v� sẽ sống,
Cung k�nh v� t�n trọng,
Ph�p chơn ch�nh vi diệu,
Ph�p nhĩ l� như vậy,
Đối với chư Phật-đ�.
Do vậy, muốn lợi �ch,
Ước vọng l�m Đại nh�n,
H�y cung k�nh, t�n trọng
Ph�p chơn ch�nh vi diệu,
H�y ghi nhớ gi�o ph�p,
Chư Phật Ch�nh Đẳng Gi�c.
