14. And when the Blessed One had passed away, simultaneously with his Parinibbana, Sakka, king of the gods,61 spoke this stanza:

14. Khi Thế T�n diệt độ, Thi�n chủ Sakka, c�ng l�c Ng�i diệt độ, thốt l�n b�i kệ n�y:

Transient are all compounded things,
Subject to arise and vanish;
Having come into existence they pass away;
Good is the peace when they forever cease.

C�c h�nh l� v� thường, 
C� sanh phải c� diệt 
Đ� sanh, ch�ng phải diệt, 
Nhiếp ch�ng l� an lạc. 

15. And when the Blessed One had passed away, simultaneously with his Parinibbana, the Venerable Anuruddha spoke this stanza:

15. Khi Thế T�n diệt độ, t�n giả Anuruddha, c�ng l�c Ng�i diệt độ, thốt l�n b�i kệ n�y:

No movement of the breath, but with steadfast heart,
Free from desires and tranquil  —  so the sage
Comes to his end. By mortal pangs unshaken,
His mind, like a flame extinguished, finds release.

Kh�ng phải thở ra v�o 
Ch�nh t�m tr� ch�nh định 
Kh�ng tham �i tịch tịnh 
Tu sĩ hướng diệt độ 
Ch�nh t�m tịnh bất động 
Nhẫn chịu mọi cảm thọ

T�m giải tho�t ho�n to�n. 

16. And when the Blessed One had passed away, simultaneously with his Parinibbana, the Venerable Ananda spoke this stanza:

16. Khi Thế T�n diệt độ, t�n giả Ananda, c�ng l�c Ng�i diệt độ, thốt l�n b�i kệ n�y:

Then there was terror, and the hair stood up, when he,
The All-accomplished One, the Buddha, passed away.

Thật kinh khủng b�ng ho�ng, 
Thật r�u t�c dựng ngược, 
Khi Bậc To�n thiện năng, 
Bậc Gi�c ngộ nhập diệt.

17. Then, when the Blessed One had passed away, some bhikkhus, not yet freed from passion, lifted up their arms and wept; and some, flinging themselves on the ground, rolled from side to side and wept, lamenting: "Too soon has the Blessed One come to his Parinibbana! Too soon has the Happy One come to his Parinibbana! Too soon has the Eye of the World vanished from sight!"

17. Khi Thế T�n diệt độ, những Tỷ-kheo chưa giải tho�t tham �i, c� vị th� kh�c than với c�nh tay duỗi cao, c� vị th� kh�c than, th�n nằm nho�i dưới đất, lăn lộn qua lại: "Thế T�n nhập diệt qu� sớm, Thiện Thệ nhập diệt qu� sớm, Ph�p nh�n biến mất ở tr�n đời qu� sớm".

But the bhikkhus who were freed from passion, mindful and clearly comprehending, reflected in this way: "Impermanent are all compounded things. How could this be otherwise?"

C�n những Tỷ-kheo đ� diệt trừ tham �i, những vị n�y an tr� ch�nh niệm tỉnh gi�c, nhẫn nại, suy tư: "C�c h�nh l� v� thường, l�m sao tr�nh khỏi sự kiện ấy?"

18. And the Venerable Anuruddha addressed the bhikkhus, saying: "Enough, friends! Do not grieve, do not lament! For has not the Blessed One declared that with all that is dear and beloved there must be change, separation, and severance? Of that which is born, come into being, compounded and subject to decay, how can one say: 'May it not come to dissolution!'? The deities, friends, are aggrieved."

18. L�c bấy giờ, t�n giả Anuruddha n�i với c�c Tỷ Kheo: - Th�i c�c Hiền giả, chớ c� sầu n�o, chớ c� kh�c than. N�y c�c Hiền giả, phải chăng Thế T�n đ� tuy�n bố ngay từ ban đầu rằng mọi vật ưu �i th�n t�nh đều phải sanh biệt, tử biệt v� dị biệt. N�y c�c Hiền giả, l�m sao c� thể được như vầy: " Những g� sanh, tồn tại, hữu vi, chịu sự biến hoại m� lại mong khỏi c� sự biến dịch? Thật kh�ng c� sự trạng ấy". N�y c�c Hiền giả, ch�nh chư Thi�n đang tr�ch đ�.

"But, venerable sir, of what deities is the Venerable Anuruddha aware?"

- Thưa T�n giả Anuruddha, T�n giả đang nghĩ đến hạng chư Thi�n n�o?

"There are deities, friend Ananda, in space and on the earth who are earthly-minded; with dishevelled hair they weep, with uplifted arms they weep; flinging themselves on the ground, they roll from side to side, lamenting: 'Too soon has the Blessed One come to his Parinibbana! Too soon has the Happy One come to his Parinibbana! Too soon has the Eye of the World vanished from sight!' But those deities who are freed from passion, mindful and clearly comprehending, reflect in this way: 'Impermanent are all compounded things. How could this be otherwise?'"

- Hiền giả Ananda, c� hạng chư Thi�n ở tr�n hư kh�ng nhưng c� t�m tư thế tục, những vị n�y kh�c than với đầu b� t�c rối, kh�c than với c�nh tay duỗi cao, kh�c than th�n bổ nh�ai dưới đất, lăn lộn qua lại: "Thế T�n nhập diệt qu� sớm, Thiện Thệ nhập diệt qu� sớm, Ph�p nh�n biến mất ở tr�n đời qu� sớm". Hiền giả Ananda, c� hạng chư Thi�n ở tr�n đất với t�m tư thế tục, những vị n�y kh�c than với đầu b� t�c rối, kh�c than với c�nh tay duỗi cao, kh�c than th�n nằm nh�ai dưới đất, lăn lộn qua lại: "Thế T�n nhập diệt qu� sớm, Thiện Thệ nhập diệt qu� sớm, Ph�p nh�n biến mất ở tr�n đời qu� sớm". 19. Now the Venerable Anuruddha and the Venerable Ananda spent the rest of the night in talking on the Dhamma. Then the Venerable Anuruddha spoke to the Venerable Ananda, saying: "Go now, friend Ananda, to Kusinara, and announce to the Mallas: 'The Blessed One, Vasetthas, has passed away. Do now as seems fitting to you.'"

19. T�n giả Anuruddha v� t�n giả Ananda luận b�n về Ch�nh ph�p suốt cả đ�m c�n lại. Rồi t�n giả Anuruddha n�i với t�n giả Ananda: - Hiền giả Ananda, h�y v�o th�nh Kusin�r�: "N�y V�setth�, Thế T�n đ� diệt độ, h�y l�m những g� c�c Người nghĩ phải l�m".

"So be it, venerable sir." And the Venerable Ananda prepared himself in the forenoon, and taking bowl and robe, went with a companion into Kusinara.

_ T�n giả, xin v�ng! T�n giả Ananda v�ng lời t�n giả Anuruddha, buổi s�ng đắp y, đem theo y b�t, c�ng một thị giả, v�o th�nh Kusin�r�.

20. At that time the Mallas of Kusinara had gathered in the council hall to consider that very matter. And the Venerable Ananda approached them and announced: "The Blessed One, Vasetthas, has passed away. Do now as seems fitting to you."

20. L�c bấy giờ, d�n Mall� ở Kusin�r� đang tụ họp tại giảng đường v� một v�i c�ng vụ. T�n giả Ananda đến tại giảng đường của d�n Mall� ở Kusin�r�, sau khi đến liền n�i với d�n Mall� ở Kusin�r�: "N�y V�setth�, Thế T�n đ� diệt độ, h�y l�m những g� c�c Người nghĩ phải l�m".

And when they heard the Venerable Ananda speak these words, the Mallas with their sons, their wives, and the wives of their sons, were sorely grieved, grieved at heart and afflicted; and some, with their hair all dishevelled, with arms upraised in despair, wept; flinging themselves on the ground, they rolled from side to side, lamenting: "Too soon has the Blessed One come to his Parinibbana! "Too soon has the Happy One come to his Parinibbana! Too soon has the Eye of the World vanished from sight!"

D�n Mall� c�ng với con trai, con g�i v� vợ, khi nghe t�n giả Ananda n�i như vậy liền đau đớn sầu muộn, t�m tư khổ n�o, kẻ th� kh�c than với đầu b� t�c rối, kẻ th� kh�c than với c�nh tay duỗi cao, kẻ th� kh�c than th�n bổ nh�ai dưới đất, lăn lộn qua lại: "Thế T�n nhập diệt qu� sớm, Thiện Thệ nhập diệt qu� sớm, Ph�p nh�n biến mất ở tr�n đời qu� sớm".

Homage to the Remains

21. Then the Mallas of Kusinara gave orders to their men, saying: "Gather now all the perfumes, flower-garlands, and musicians, even all that are in Kusinara." And the Mallas, with the perfumes, the flower-garlands, and the musicians, and with five hundred sets of clothing, went to the Sala Grove, the recreation park of the Mallas, and approached the body of the Blessed One. And having approached, they paid homage to the body of the Blessed One with dance, song, music, flower-garlands, and perfume, and erecting canopies and pavilions, they spent the day showing respect, honor, and veneration to the body of the Blessed One. And then the thought came to them: "Now the day is too far spent for us to cremate the body of the Blessed One. Tomorrow we will do it."

21. Rồi d�n Kusin�r� đem theo hương, tr�ng hoa, tất cả nhạc kh� v� năm trăm cuộn vải đi đến Upavattana, tại rừng S�l� của d�ng họ Mall�, đến tại chỗ th�n x� lợi của Thế T�n, rồi ch�ng ở lại cả ng�y t�n trọng, cung k�nh, đảnh lễ, c�ng dường th�n x� lợi Thế T�n với c�c điệu m�a, h�t, nhạc, tr�ng hoa, hương, l�m những bảo c�i bằng vải v� tr�ng hoa Mandala. Rồi d�n Mall� ở Kusin�r� suy nghĩ: "H�m nay, nếu thi�u th�n x� lợi Thế T�n thời qu� sớm. Ng�y mai, ch�ng ta sẽ l�m lễ thi�u th�n x� lợi của Thế T�n".

And for the second day, and a third, fourth, fifth, and sixth day, they paid homage to the body of the Blessed One with dance, song, music, flower-garlands, and perfume, and erecting canopies and pavilions, they spent the day showing respect, honor, and veneration to the body of the Blessed One.

Rồi d�n Mall� ở Kusin�r�, cả ng�y thứ hai, t�n trọng, cung k�nh, đảnh lễ, c�ng dường th�n x� lợi Thế T�n với c�c điệu m�a, h�t, nhạc, tr�ng hoa, hương, l�m những bảo c�i bằng vải v� tr�ng hoa Mandala, ng�y thứ ba cũng như vậy, ng�y thứ tư cũng như vậy, ng�y thứ năm cũng như vậy, ng�y thứ s�u cũng như vậy.

But on the seventh day the thought came to them: "We have paid homage to the body of the Blessed One with dance, song, music, flower-garlands, and perfume, and have shown respect, honor, and veneration; let us now carry the body of the Blessed One southward to the southern part of the town and beyond, and let us there cremate the body of the Blessed One south of the town."

Đến ng�y thứ bảy, d�n Mall� ở Kusin�r� suy nghĩ: " Ch�ng ta đ� t�n trọng, cung k�nh, đảnh lễ, c�ng dường th�n x� lợi Thế T�n với c�c điệu m�a, h�t, nhạc, tr�ng hoa, hương, nay ch�ng ta h�y chở th�n x� lợi Thế T�n ra ngo�i th�nh về ph�a Nam v� l�m lễ thi�u th�n tại chỗ ấy".

And eight Mallas of the foremost families, bathed from the crown of their heads and wearing new clothes, with the thought: "We will lift up the body of the Blessed One," tried to do so but they could not.

L�c bấy giờ t�m vị tộc trưởng Mall� gội đầu, mặc �o mới với � định khi�ng nổi th�n x� lợi Như Lai nhưng kh�ng khi�ng nổi được.

22. Then the Mallas spoke to the Venerable Anuruddha, saying: "What is the cause, Venerable Anuruddha, what is the reason that these eight Mallas of the foremost families, bathed from the crown of their heads and wearing new clothes, with the thought: 'We will lift up the body of the Blessed One,' try to do so but cannot?"

22. C�c vị Mall� ở Kusin�r� bạch t�n giả Anuruddha: -Bạch t�n giả, do nh�n g�, do duy�n g�, t�m vị tộc trưởng Mall� n�y gội đầu, mặc �o mới với � định khi�ng nổi th�n x� lợi Như Lai, nhưng kh�ng khi�ng nổi được?

"You, Vasetthas, have one purpose, the deities have another."

N�y V�setth�, v� � định của c�c Ngươi kh�c, � định của chư Thi�n kh�c.

"Then what, venerable sir, is the purpose of the deities?"

- Bạch t�n giả, � định của chư Thi�n l� g�?

"Your purpose, Vasetthas, is this: 'We have paid homage to the body of the Blessed One with dance, song, music, flower-garlands, and perfume, and have shown respect, honor, and veneration; let us now carry the body of the Blessed One southward to the southern part of the town and beyond, and let us there cremate the body of the Blessed One south of the town.' But the purpose of the deities, Vasetthas, is this: 'We have paid homage to the body of the Blessed One with heavenly dance, song, music, flower-garlands, and perfume, and have shown respect, honor, and veneration; let us now carry the body of the Blessed One northward to the northern part of the town; and having carried it through the northern gate, let us go through the center of the town, and then eastward to the east of the town; and having passed through the east gate, let us carry it to the cetiya of the Mallas, Makuta-bandhana, and there let us cremate the body of the Blessed One.'"

- N�y c�c V�setth�, ỳ định của c�c Ngươi như sau: " Ch�ng ta đ� t�n trọng, cung k�nh, đảnh lễ, c�ng dường th�n x� lợi Thế T�n với c�c điệu m�a, h�t, nhạc, tr�ng hoa, hương. Nay ch�ng ta h�y chở th�n x� lợi Thế T�n ra ngo�i th�nh về ph�a Nam v� l�m lễ thi�u th�n tại chỗ ấy. - N�y c�c V�setth�, � định của chư Thi�n như sau: " Ch�ng ta đ� t�n trọng, cung k�nh, đảnh lễ, c�ng dường th�n x� lợi Thế T�n với c�c điệu m�a, h�t, nhạc, tr�ng hoa, hương của chư Thi�n, nay ch�ng ta h�y khi�ng th�n x� lợi Thế T�n về hướng Bắc đến ph�a Bắc của th�nh. Sau khi khi�ng qua cửa ph�a Bắc, h�y khi�ng qua trung t�m của th�nh, rồi hướng về ph�a Đ�ng, khi�ng đến ph�a Đ�ng của th�nh. Sau khi khi�ng qua cửa ph�a Đ�ng, h�y khi�ng đến ph�a Đ�ng của th�nh, tại đền của d�n Mall� t�n l� Makuta-bandhana, v� ch�ng ta sẽ thi�u th�n Thế T�n tại chỗ ấy."

"As the deities wish, venerable sir, so let it be."

- Bạch t�n giả, � định của chư Thi�n thế n�o, � định của ch�ng con cũng vậy.

23. Thereupon the whole of Kusinara, even to the dust heaps and rubbish heaps, became covered knee-deep in mandarava flowers.62 And homage was paid to the body of the Blessed One by the deities as well as the Mallas of Kusinara. With dance, song, music, flower-garlands, and perfume, both divine and human, respect, honor, and veneration were shown. And they carried the body of the Blessed One northward to the northern part of the town; and having carried it through the northern gate, they went through the center of the town, and then eastward to the east of the town; and having passed through the east gate, they carried the body of the Blessed One to the cetiya of the Mallas, Makuta-bandhana, and there laid it down.

23. L�c ấy, khắp cả Kusin�r� cho đến đống bụi, đống r�c, được rải la liệt l�n đến đầu gối t�an hoa Mandar�va. Rồi chư Thi�n v� c�c d�n Mall� ở Kusin�r�, sau khi đ� t�n trọng, cung k�nh, đảnh lễ, c�ng dường th�n x� lợi Thế T�n với c�c điệu m�a, h�t, nhạc, tr�ng hoa, hương của chư Thi�n v� lo�i Người, liền khi�ng th�n x� lợi Thế T�n về hướng Bắc đến ph�a Bắc của th�nh. Sau khi khi�ng qua cửa ph�a Bắc, liền khi�ng qua trung t�m của th�nh, rồi hướng về ph�a Đ�ng, khi�ng đến ph�a Đ�ng của th�nh. Sau khi khi�ng qua cửa ph�a Đ�ng, liền khi�ng đến ph�a Đ�ng của th�nh, tại đền của d�n Mall� t�n l� Makuta-bandhana v� đặt th�n x� lợi của Thế T�n tại chỗ ấy.

24. Then the Mallas of Kusinara spoke to the Venerable Ananda, saying: "How should we act, Venerable Ananda, respecting the body of the Tathagata?"

24. Rồi d�n Mall� bạch t�n giả Ananda: - Bạch T�n giả Ananda, ch�ng con nay phải xử sự như thế n�o đối với th�n x� lợi Như Lai?

"After the same manner, Vasetthas, as towards the body of a universal monarch."

- N�y c�c V�setth�, xử sự th�n Chuyển lu�n Th�nh vương như thế n�o, h�y xử sự th�n x� lợi Như Lai như vậy.

"But how, venerable Ananda, do they act respecting the body of a universal monarch?"

- Bạch T�n giả Ananda, xử sự th�n Chuyển lu�n Th�nh vương phải như thế n�o?

"The body of a universal monarch, Vasetthas, is first wrapped round with new linen, and then with teased cotton wool. And again it is wrapped round with new linen, and again with teased cotton wool, and so it is done up to five hundred layers of linen and five hundred of cotton wool. When that is done, the body of the universal monarch is placed in an iron oil-vessel, which is enclosed in another iron vessel and a funeral pyre is built of all kinds of perfumed woods, and so the body of the universal monarch is burned. And at a crossroads a stupa is raised for the universal monarch. So it is done, Vasetthas, with the body of a universal monarch.

- N�y c�c V�setth�, th�n Chuyển lu�n Th�nh vương được vấn tr�n với vải mới. Sau khi vấn vải mới, lại được vấn th�m với vải gai bện. Sau khi vấn với vải gai bện, lại vấn th�m với vải mới v� tiếp tục như vậy cho đến năm trăm lớp cả hai loại vải. Rồi th�n được đặt trong một h�m dầu bằng sắt, h�m sắt n�y được một h�m sắt kh�c đậy k�n. Xong một gi�n hỏa gồm mọi loại hương được x�y dựng l�n, th�n vị Chuyển lu�n Th�nh vương được đem thi�u tr�n gi�n hỏa n�y, v� tại ng tư đường, th�p vị Chuyển lu�n Th�nh vương n�y được x�y dựng l�n. N�y c�c V�setth�, đ� l� ph�p t�ng th�n của vị Chuyển lu�n Th�nh vương.

"And even, Vasetthas, as with the body of a universal monarch, so should it be done with the body of the Tathagata; and at a crossroads also a stupa should be raised for the Tathagata. And whoever shall bring to that place garlands or incense or sandalwood paste, or pay reverence, and whose mind becomes calm there — it will be to his well being and happiness for a long time."

N�y c�c V�setth�, ph�p t�ng th�n của vị Chuyển lu�n Th�nh vương như thế n�o, ph�p t�ng th�n của Thế T�n cũng như vậy. Th�p của Như Lai phải được dựng l�n tại ng� tư đường. V� những ai đem đến tại chỗ ấy v�ng hoa, hương, hay hương bột nhiều m�u, đảnh lễ th�p hay khởi t�m hoan hỷ (khi đứng trước mặt th�p) , thời những người ấy sẽ được lợi �ch, hạnh ph�c l�u d�i.

25. Then the Mallas gave orders to their men, saying: "Gather now all the teased cotton wool of the Mallas!" And the Mallas of Kusinara wrapped the body of the Blessed One round with new linen, and then with teased cotton wool. And again they wrapped it round with new linen, and again with teased cotton wool, and so it was done up to five hundred layers of linen and five hundred of cotton wool. When that was done, they placed the body of the Blessed One in an iron oil-vessel, which was enclosed in another iron vessel, and they built a funeral pyre of all kinds of perfumed woods, and upon it they laid the body of the Blessed One.

25. V� c�c người Mall� ở Kusin�r� sai những người l�m c�ng: - H�y đem lại tất cả vải gai bện của Mall� . Rồi những người Mall� ở Kusin�r� vấn tr�n th�n Thế T�n với vải mới. Sau khi vấn vải mới xong, lại vấn th�m với vải gai bện. Sau khi vấn với vải gai bện lại vấn th�m với vải mới v� tiếp tục như vậy cho đến năm trăm lớp cả hai loại vải. Rồi đặt th�n Như Lai v�o trong một h�m dầu bằng sắt, đậy h�m sắt n�y v�o một h�m sắt kh�c, dựng l�n một gi�n hỏa gồm mọi loại hương v� đặt th�n Thế T�n tr�n gi�n hỏa.

26. Now at that time the Venerable Maha Kassapa63 was journeying from Pava to Kusinara together with a large company of five hundred bhikkhus. And on the way, the Venerable Maha Kassapa went aside from the highway and sat down at the foot of a tree.

26. L�c bấy giờ, T�n giả Mall� Kassapa đang đi giữa đường từ P�v� đến Kusin�r� với đại ch�ng Tỷ-kheo khoảng năm trăm vị. Rồi T�n giả Mall� Kassapa bước xuống đường v� đến ngồi tại một gốc c�y.

And a certain Ajivaka came by, on his way to Pava, and he had taken a mandarava flower from Kusinara. And the Venerable Maha Kassapa saw the Ajivaka coming from a distance, and as he drew close he spoke to him, saying: "Do you know, friend, anything of our Master?"

L�c bấy giờ c� một t� mạng ngoại đạo lấy một hoa Mand�rava ở Kusin�r� v� đang đi tr�n một con đường đến P�v�. T�n giả Mall� Kassapa thấy t� mạng ngoại đạo đi từ đ�ng xa đến. Thấy vạya, t�n giả liền hỏi t� mạng ngoại đạo ấy: - N�y Hiền giả, Hiền giả c� biết bậc Đạo sư ch�ng t�i kh�ng?

"Yes, friend, I know. It is now seven days since the ascetic Gotama passed away. From there I have brought this mandarava flower."

- N�y Hiền giả, t�i c� biết. Sa-m�n Gotama đ� diệt độ c�ch h�m nay một tuần. Từ chỗ ấy, t�i được hoa Mand�rava n�y.

27. Thereupon some bhikkhus, not yet freed from passion, lifted up their arms and wept; and some, flinging themselves on the ground, rolled from side to side and wept, lamenting: "Too soon has the Blessed One come to his Parinibbana! Too soon has the Happy One come to his Parinibbana! Too soon has the Eye of the World vanished from sight!"

27. L�c ấy những Tỷ-kheo chưa giải tho�t tham �i, c� vị th� kh�c than với c�nh tay duỗi cao, c� vị th� kh�c than, th�n nằm nho�i dưới đất, lăn lộn qua lại: "Thế T�n nhập diệt qu� sớm, Thiện Thệ nhập diệt qu� sớm, Ph�p nh�n biến mất ở tr�n đời qu� sớm".

28. Now at that time, one Subhadda, who had renounced only in his old age, was seated in the assembly.64 And he addressed the bhikkhus, saying: "Enough, friends! Do not grieve, do not lament! We are well rid of that great ascetic. Too long, friends, have we been oppressed by his saying: 'This is fitting for you; that is not fitting for you.' Now we shall be able to do as we wish, and what we do not wish, that we shall not do."

28. L�c bấy giờ, Subhadda được xuất gia khi đ� lớn tuổi đang ngồi trong hội ch�ng n�y. Subhadda được xuất gia khi đ� lớn tuổi n�i với những Tỷ-kheo ấy: - Th�i c�c Hiền giả, chớ c� sầu n�o, chớ c� kh�c than. Ch�ng ta đ� được tho�t khỏi ho�n to�n vị Đại Sa-m�n ấy, ch�ng ta đ� bị phiền nhiễu quấy rầy với những lời: "L�m như thế n�y kh�ng hợp với c�c Ngươi. L�m như thế n�y hợp với c�c Ngươi". Nay những g� ch�ng ta muốn, ch�ng ta l�m, những g� ch�ng ta kh�ng muốn, ch�ng ta kh�ng l�m.

But the Venerable Maha Kassapa addressed the bhikkhus, saying: "Enough friends! Do not grieve, do not lament! For has not the Blessed One declared that with all that is dear and beloved there must be change, separation, and severance? Of that which is born, come into being, compounded, and subject to decay, how can one say: 'May it not come to dissolution!'?"

T�n giả Mah� Kassapa mới n�i với c�c vị Tỷ-kheo: - Th�i c�c Hiền giả, chớ c� sầu n�o, chớ c� kh�c than. N�y c�c Hiền giả, phải chăng Thế T�n đ� tuy�n bố ngay từ ban đầu rằng mọi vật ưu �i th�n t�nh đều phải bị sanh biệt, tử biệt v� dị biệt. N�y c�c Hiền giả, l�m sao c� thể được như vầy: Những g� sanh, tồn tại, hữu vi, chịu sự biến hoại m� lại mong khỏi c� sự biến dịch? Thật kh�ng c� sự trạng ấy.

29. Now at that time four Mallas of the foremost families, bathed from the crown of their heads and wearing new clothes, with the thought: "We will set alight the Blessed One's pyre," tried to do so but they could not. And the Mallas spoke to the Venerable Anuruddha, saying: "What is the cause, Venerable Anuruddha, what is the reason that these four Mallas of the foremost families, bathed from the crown of their heads and wearing new clothes, with the thought: "We will set alight the Blessed One's pyre,' try to do so but cannot?"

29. L�c bấy giờ bốn vị tộc trưởng Mall� gội đầu, mặc �o mới với � định ch�m lửa thi�u gi�n hỏa Thế T�n nhưng ch�m lửa kh�ng ch�y. C�c vị Mall� ở Kusin�r� bạch t�n giả Anuruddha: - Bạch T�n giả, do nh�n g�, do duy�n g�, bốn vị tộc trưởng Mall� n�y gội đầu, mặc �o mới với � định ch�m lửa thi�u gi�n hỏa Thế T�n, nhưng ch�m lửa kh�ng ch�y?

"You, Vasetthas, have one purpose, the deities have another."

- N�y c�c V�setth�, � định của chư Thi�n kh�c.

"Then what, venerable sir, is the purpose of the deities?"

- Bạch T�n giả, � định của chư Thi�n như thế n�o?

"The purpose of the deities, Vasetthas, is this: 'The Venerable Maha Kassapa is on his way from Pava to Kusinara together with a large company of five hundred bhikkhus. Let not the Blessed One's pyre be set alight until the Venerable Maha Kassapa has paid homage at the feet of the Blessed One.'"

- N�y c�c v�setth�, � định của chư Thi�n như sau: "T�n giả Mah� Kassapa nay đang đi giữa đường giữa P�v� v� Kusin�r� c�ng với đại ch�ng Tỷ-kheo khoảng năm trăm vị. Gi�n hỏa Thế T�n chỉ được đốt ch�y khi t�n giả Mah� Kassapa c�i đầu đảnh lễ Thế T�n".

"As the deities wish, venerable sir, so let it be."

- Bạch T�n giả, � định chư Thi�n như thế n�o, h�y l�m y như vậy.

30. And the Venerable Maha Kassapa approached the pyre of the Blessed One, at the cetiya of the Mallas, Makuta-bandhana, in Kusinara. And he arranged his upper robe on one shoulder, and with his clasped hands raised in salutation, he walked three times round the pyre, keeping his right side towards the Blessed One's body, and he paid homage at the feet of the Blessed One. And even so did the five hundred bhikkhus.

30. Rồi T�n giả Mah� Kassapa đến tại đền Makuta Bandhana của những vị Mall� tại gi�n hỏa Thế T�n, khi đến xong liền cho�ng �o ph�a một b�n vai, chấp tay, đi nhiễu ph�a tay phải xung quanh gi�n hỏa ba lần, cởi mở ch�n ra v� c�i đầu đảnh lễ ch�n Thế T�n. Năm trăm vị Tỷ-kheo ấy cho�ng �o ph�a một b�n vai, chấp tay, đi nhiễu qua ph�a tay phải xung quanh gi�n hỏa ba lần v� c�i đầu đảnh lễ ch�n Thế T�n.

And when homage had been paid by the Venerable Maha Kassapa and the five hundred bhikkhus, the pyre of the Blessed One burst into flame by itself.

V� khi t�n giả Mah� Kassapa v� năm trăm vị Tỷ-kheo đảnh lễ xong, thời gi�n hỏa Thế T�n tự bắt lửa ch�y.

31. And it came about that when the body of the Blessed One had been burned, no ashes or particles were to be seen of what had been skin, tissue, flesh, sinews, and fluid; only bones remained. Just as when ghee or oil is burned, it leaves no particles or ashes behind, even so when the body of the Blessed One had been burned, no ashes or particles were to be seen of what had been skin, tissue, flesh, sinews, and fluid; only bones remained. And of the five hundred linen wrappings, only two were not consumed, the innermost and the outermost.

31. Khi th�n Thế T�n đ� ch�y, từ da ngo�i cho đến da mỏng, thịt, d�y g�n hay nước giữa c�c khớp xương, thảy đều ch�y sạch kh�ng c� tro, kh�ng c� than, chỉ c� xương x� lợi c�n lại. Như sanh t� hay dầu bị ch�y, tất cả đều ch�y sạch kh�ng c� tro, kh�ng c� than, cũng vậy khi th�n Thế T�n ch�y, từ da ngo�i cho đến da mỏng, thịt, d�y g�n hay nước giữa khớp xương, tất cả đều ch�y sạch kh�ng c� tro, kh�ng c� than, chỉ c� xương x� lợi c�n lại. V� năm trăm tầng lớp vải gai bện, cả hai lớp trong nhất v� lớp ngo�i nhất đều bị ch�y thi�u.

32. And when the body of the Blessed One had been burned, water rained down from heaven and extinguished the pyre of the Blessed One, and from the sala trees water came forth, and the Mallas of Kusinara brought water scented with many kinds of perfumes, and they too extinguished the pyre of the Blessed One.

32. Khi th�n Thế T�n bị thi�u ch�y xong, một d�ng nước từ hư kh�ng chảy xuống tưới tắt gi�n hỏa Thế T�n, v� một d�ng nước từ kho nước (hay từ c�y s�l�) phun l�n tưới tắt gi�n hỏa Thế T�n, v� c�c người Mall� ở Kusin�r� d�ng nước với mọi loại hương tưới tắt gi�n hỏa Thế T�n.

And the Mallas of Kusinara laid the relics of the Blessed One in their council hall, and surrounded them with a lattice-work of spears and encircled them with a fence of bows; and there for seven days they paid homage to the relics of the Blessed One with dance, song, music, flower-garlands, and perfume, and showed respect, honor, and veneration to the relics of the Blessed One.

Rồi c�c người Mall� xứ Kusin�r� đặt x� lợi Thế T�n trong giảng đường, d�ng c�y thương l�m h�ng r�o, d�ng c�y cung l�m bức th�nh xung quanh v� trong bảy ng�y t�n trng, cung k�nh, đảnh lễ, c�ng dường với c�c điệu m�a, h�t, nhạc, v�ng hoa, hương.

33. Then the king of Magadha, Ajatasattu, son of the Videhi queen, came to know that at Kusinara the Blessed One had passed away. And he sent a message to the Mallas of Kusinara, saying: "The Blessed One was of the warrior caste, and I am too. I am worthy to receive a portion of the relics of the Blessed One. I will erect a stupa over the relics of the Blessed One and hold a festival in their honor."

33. Vua nước Magadha t�n l� Aj�tasattu Vedehiputta nghe tin Thế T�n đ� diệt độ ở Kusin�r�. Vua liền gởi một sứ giả đến c�c người Mall� ở Kusin�r� "Thế T�n l� người S�t-đế-lỵ, ta cũng l� người S�t-đế-lỵ. Ta cũng xứng đ�ng được một phần x� lợi Thế T�n, ta cũng dựng th�p v� tổ chức nghi lễ đối với x� lợi Thế T�n".

34. And the Licchavis of Vesali came to know that at Kusinara the Blessed One had passed away. And they sent a message to the Mallas of Kusinara, saying: "The Blessed One was of the warrior caste, and we are too. We are worthy to receive a portion of the relics of the Blessed One. We will erect a stupa over the relics of the Blessed One and hold a festival in their honor."

34. Những người Licchav� ở Ves�li nghe tin Thế T�n đ� diệt độ ở Kusin�r� liền gởi một sứ giả đến c�c người Mall� ở Kusin�r�: "Thế T�n l� người S�t-đế-lỵ, ch�ng t�i cũng l� người S�t-đế-lỵ. Ch�ng t�i cũng xứng đ�ng được phần x� lợi Thế T�n. Ch�ng t�i cũng dựng th�p v� tổ chức nghi lễ đối với x�-lợi Thế T�n".

35. And the Sakyas of Kapilavatthu came to know that at Kusinara the Blessed One had passed away. And they sent a message to the Mallas of Kusinara, saying: "The Blessed One was the greatest of our clan. We are worthy to receive a portion of the relics of the Blessed One. We will erect a stupa over the relics of the Blessed One and hold a festival in their honor."

35. C�c người Saky� ở Kapilavatthu nghe tin Thế T�n đ� diệt độ ở Kusin�r�, liền gởi một sứ giả đến c�c người Mall� ở Kusin�r�: "Thế T�n l� người S�t-đế-lỵ, ch�ng t�i cũng l� người S�t-đế-lỵ. Ch�ng t�i cũng xứng đ�ng được một phần x� lợi Thế T�n. Ch�ng t�i cũng sẽ dựng th�p v� tổ chức c�c nghi lễ với x�-lợi Thế T�n".

36. And the Bulis of Allakappa came to know that at Kusinara the Blessed One had passed away. And they sent a message to the Mallas of Kusinara, saying: "The Blessed One was of the warrior caste, and we are too. We are worthy to receive a portion of the relics of the Blessed One. We will erect a stupa over the relics of the Blessed One and hold a festival in their honor."

36. Những người Buli ở Allakappa nghe tin Thế T�n đ� diệt độ ở Kusin�r�, liền gởi một sứ giả đến c�c người Mall� ở Kusin�r�: "Thế T�n l� người S�t-đế-lỵ, ch�ng t�i cũng l� người S�t-đế-lỵ. Ch�ng t�i cũng xứng đ�ng được một phần x�-lợi Thế T�n. Ch�ng t�i cũng sẽ dựng th�p v� tổ chức c�c nghi lễ đốis với x� lợi Thế T�n".

37. And the Kolis of Ramagama came to know that at Kusinara the Blessed One had passed away. And they sent a message to the Mallas of Kusinara, saying: "The Blessed One was of the warrior caste, and we are too. We are worthy to receive a portion of the relics of the Blessed One. We will erect a stupa over the relics of the Blessed One and hold a festival in their honor."

37. Những người Koli ở R�mag�ma nghe tin Thế T�n đ� diệt độ ở Kusin�r� , liền gởi một sứ giả đến c�c người Mall� ở Kusin�r�: "Thế T�n l� người S�t-đế-lỵ, ch�ng t�i cũng l� người S�t-đế-lỵ. Ch�ng t�i cũng xứng đ�ng được một phần x� lợi Thế T�n. Ch�ng t�i cũng sẽ dựng th�p v� tổ chức c�c nghi lễ đối với x� lợi Thế T�n."

38. And the Vethadipa brahman came to know that at Kusinara the Blessed One had passed away. And he sent a message to the Mallas of Kusinara, saying: "The Blessed One was of the warrior caste, and I am a brahman. I am worthy to receive a portion of the relics of the Blessed One. I will erect a stupa over the relics of the Blessed One and hold a festival in their honor."

38. B�-la-m�n Vethad�paka nghe tin Thế T�n đ� diệt độ ở Kusin�r�, liền gởi một sứ giả đến c�c người Mall� ở Kusin�r�: "Thế T�n l� người S�t-đế-lỵ, t�i l� người B�-la-m�n. T�i cũng xứng đ�ng được một phần x� lợi Thế T�n. T�i cũng sẽ dựng th�p v� tổ chức c�c nghi lễ đối với x�-lợi Thế T�n".

39. And the Mallas of Pava came to know that at Kusinara the Blessed One had passed away. And they sent a message to the Mallas of Kusinara, saying: "The Blessed One was of the warrior caste, and we are too. We are worthy to receive a portion of the relics of the Blessed One. We will erect a stupa over the relics of the Blessed One and hold a festival in their honor."

39. C�c người Mall� ở P�v� nghe tin Thế T�n đ� diệt độ liền gửi một sứ giả đến c�c người Mall� ở Kusin�r�: "Thế T�n l� người S�t-đế-lỵ, ch�ng t�i cũng l� người S�t-đế-lỵ. Ch�ng t�i cũng xứng đ�ng được một phần x�-lợi Thế T�n. Ch�ng t�i cũng sẽ dựng th�p v� tổ chức c�c nghi lễ đối với x�-lợi Thế T�n".

40. But when they heard these words, the Mallas of Kusinara addressed the assembly, saying: "The Blessed One has passed away in our township. We shall not part with any portion of the relics of the Blessed One." Then the brahman Dona spoke to the assembly, saying:

40. Khi được n�i vậy c�c người Mall� ở Kusin�r� liền tuy�n bố giữa đại ch�ng: - Thế T�n đ� diệt độ tại l�ng vườn của ch�ng t�i, ch�ng t�i sẽ kh�ng cho phần x� lợi n�o của Thế T�n. Khi nghe vậy. B�-la-m�n Dona n�i với ch�ng:

One word from me, I beg you, sirs, to hear!
Our Buddha taught us ever to forbear;
Unseemly would it be should strife arise
And war and bloodshed, over the custody
Of his remains, who was the best of men!
Let us all, sirs, in friendliness agree
To share eight portions  —  so that far and wide
Stupas may rise, and seeing them, mankind
Faith in the All-Enlightened One will find!

T�n giả, h�y nghe lời t�i n�i! 
Phật dạy ch�ng ta phải kham nhẫn. 
Thật kh�ng tốt nếu c� tranh gi�nh. 
Khi chia x� lợi bậc Thượng nh�n. 
Ch�ng ta h�y đo�n kết nhất t�m, 
Hoan hỷ chia x� lợi t�m phần. 
Ch�ng ta h�y dựng th�p mọi phương, 
Đại ch�ng mười phương tin Ph�p nh�n. 

"So be it, brahman! Divide the relics into eight equal portions yourself."

- N�y T�n giả B�-la-m�n, Ng�i h�y ph�n chia x� lợi ra t�m phần đồng đều.

And the brahman Dona said to the assembly: "So be it, sirs." And he divided justly into eight equal portions the relics of the Blessed One, and having done so, he addressed the assembly, saying: "Let this urn, sirs, be given to me. Over this urn I will erect a stupa, and in its honor I will hold a festival." And the urn was given to the brahman Dona.

- Xin v�ng, c�c T�n giả. B�-la-m�n Dona v�ng lời hội ch�ng ấy, ph�n chia x�-lợi Thế T�n th�nh t�m phần đồng đều rồi thưa hội ch�ng: - C�c T�n giả, h�y cho t�i c�i b�nh d�ng để đ�ng chia x�-lợi n�y. T�i sẽ dựng th�p v� tổ chức c�c nghi lễ cho c�i b�nh. V� hội ch�ng ấy tặng B�-la-m�n Dona c�i b�nh.

41. Then the Moriyas of Pipphalivana came to know that at Kusinara the Blessed One had passed away. And they sent a message to the Mallas of Kusinara, saying: "The Blessed One was of the warrior caste, and we are too. We are worthy to receive a portion of the relics of the Blessed One. We will erect a stupa over the relics of the Blessed One and hold a festival in their honor."

41. V� người Moriy� ở Pipphalivana nghe tin Thế T�n đ� diệt độ liền gởi một sứ giả đến c�c người Mall� ở Kusin�r�: "Thế T�n l� người S�t-đế-lỵ, ch�ng t�i cũng l� người S�t-đế-lỵ. Ch�ng t�i cũng xứng đ�ng được hưởng một phần x� lợi Thế T�n. Ch�ng t�i cũng sẽ dựng th�p v� tổ chức c�c nghi lễ đối với x�-lợi Thế T�n".

"There is no portion of the relics of the Blessed One remaining; the relics of the Blessed One have been divided. But take from here the ashes." And they took from there the ashes.

"Nay kh�ng c�n phần x�-lợi Thế T�n n�o. X�-lợi Thế T�n đ� được ph�n chia, h�y lấy tro c�n lại". Rồi c�c vị nầy lấy than tro c�n lại.

42. And the king of Magadha, Ajatasattu, son of the Videhi queen, erected a stupa over the relics of the Blessed One at Rajagaha, and in their honor held a festival. The Licchavis of Vesali erected a stupa over the relics of the Blessed One at Vesali, and in their honor held a festival. The Sakyas of Kapilavatthu erected a stupa over the relics of the Blessed One at Kapilavatthu, and in their honor held a festival. The Bulis of Allakappa erected a stupa over the relics of the Blessed One at Allakappa, and in their honor held a festival. The Kolis of Ramagama erected a stupa over the relics of the Blessed One at Ramagama, and in their honor held a festival. The Vethadipa brahman erected a stupa over the relics of the Blessed One at Vethadipa, and in their honor held a festival. The Mallas of Pava erected a stupa over the relics of the Blessed One at Pava, and in their honor held a festival. The Mallas of Kusinara erected a stupa over the relics of the Blessed One at Kusinara, and in their honor held a festival. The brahman Dona erected a stupa over the urn, and in its honor held a festival. And the Moriyas of Pipphalivana erected a stupa over the ashes at Pipphalivana, and in their honor held a festival.

42. V� vua nước Magadha t�n l� Aj�tasattu, con b� Videhi x�y dựng th�p tr�n x�-lợi Thế T�n tại Vương X� v� tổ chức lễ c�ng dường. Những người Licchavi ở Ves�li cũng x�y dựng th�p tr�n x�-lợi Thế T�n tại Ves�li v� tổ chức lễ c�ng dường. Những người Sakya ở Kapilavatthu cũng x�y dựng tr�n x�-lợi Thế T�n tại Kapilavatthu v� tổ chức lễ c�ng dường. Những người Buli ở Allakappa cũng x�y dựng th�p tr�n x� lợi Thế T�n tại Allakappa v� tổ chức lễ c�ng dường. Những người Koli ở R�magama cũng x�y dựng th�p tr�n x�-lợi Thế T�n tại R�magama v� tổ chức lễ c�ng dường. B�-la-m�n Vethad�paka cũng x�y dựng th�p tr�n x�-lợi Thế T�n tại Vethad�pa v� tổ chức lễ c�ng dường. Những người Mall� ở P�v� cũng x�y dựng th�p tr�n x�-lợi Thế T�n tại P�v� v� tổ chức lễ c�ng dường. Những người M�ll� ở Kusin�r� cũng x�y dựng th�p tr�n x�-lợi Thế T�n tại Kusin�r� v� tổ chức lễ c�ng dường. B�-la-m�n Dona cũng x�y dựng th�p tr�n b�nh (d�ng để đong chia x�-lợi) v� tổ chức lễ c�ng dường. Những người Moriy� ở Pipphalivana cũng x�y dựng th�p tr�n những than tro v� tổ chức lễ c�ng dường.

So it came about that there were eight stupas for the relics, a ninth for the urn, and a tenth for the ashes.

Như vậy c� t�m th�p x�-lợi, th�p thứ ch�n tr�n b�nh (d�ng để đong chia x�-lợi) v� th�p thứ mười tr�n tro (x�-lợi).

And thus it was in the days of old.

Đ� l� truyền thống thời xưa như vậy.

43. Eight portions there were of the relics of him,
The All-Seeing One, the greatest of men.
Seven in Jambudipa are honored, and one
In Ramagama, by kings of the Naga race.
One tooth is honored in the Tavatimsa heaven,
One in the realm of Kalinga, and one by the Naga kings.
Through their brightness this bountiful earth
With its most excellent gifts is endowed;
For thus the relics of the All-Seeing One are best honored
By those who are worthy of honor  —  by gods and Nagas
And lords of men, yea, by the highest of mankind.
Pay homage with clasped hands! For hard indeed it is
Through hundreds of ages to meet with an All-Enlightened One!

X�-lợi ph�n t�m phần. 
Bảy phần được c�ng dường. 
Tại Jambud�pa. 
Một phần Long vương c�ng. 
Tại R�mag�ma. 
Một răng Phật được c�ng, 
Tại c�i Tam Thi�n giới, 
Một tại Gandh�ra, 
Một tại Kalinga. 
Một răng, vua Long vương. 
Tự m�nh ri�ng c�ng dường. 
Quả đất được ch�i s�ng, 
Với h�o quang x�-lợi, 
Với lễ vật c�ng dường. 
Hạng thượng phẩm, thượng đẳng. 
X�-lợi đấng Ph�p Nh�n. 
Như vậy được c�ng dường, 
Bởi những bậc t�n trọng 
C�ng k�nh lễ c�ng dường, 
Bởi những bậc t�n trọng 
C�ng k�nh lễ c�ng dường. 
Bởi Thi�n, Long, Nhơn chủ, 
Bởi bậc Tối thượng nhơn. 
C�c người h�y chắp tay, 
Cung k�nh lễ c�ng dường. 
Kh� thay sự chi�m ngưỡng. 
T�n nhan bậc Như Lai. 
Trải nhiều nhiều trăm kiếp, 
May lắm được một phần.
