I have heard that at one time the Blessed One was staying in Savatthi at Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery. Then a certain deva, in the far extreme of the night, her extreme radiance lighting up the entirety of Jeta's Grove, approached the Blessed One. On approaching, having bowed down to the Blessed One, she stood to one side. As she stood to one side, she addressed him with a verse.

Như vầy t�i nghe: Một thời Thế T�n tr� tại S�vatthi, ở Jetavana, khu vườn �ng An�thapindika. Rồi một Thi�n nh�n, khi đ�m đ� gần m�n, với dung sắc th� thắng ch�i s�ng to�n v�ng Jetavana, đi đến Thế T�n, sau khi đến đảnh lễ Thế T�n rồi đứng một b�n. �ứng một b�n, vị Thi�n nh�n ấy với b�i kệ bạch Thế T�n:

Many devas and humans beings
give thought to protection,
desiring well-being.
Tell, then, the highest protection.
The Buddha:
Not consorting with fools,
consorting with the wise,
paying homage to those worthy of homage:
	This is the highest protection.

Living in a civilized land,
having made merit in the past,
directing oneself rightly:
	This is the highest protection.

Broad knowledge, skill,
well-mastered discipline,
well-spoken words:
	This is the highest protection.

Support for one's parents,
assistance to one's wife and children,
consistency in one's work:
	This is the highest protection.

Giving, living in rectitude,
assistance to one's relatives,
deeds that are blameless:
	This is the highest protection.

Avoiding, abstaining from evil;
refraining from intoxicants,
being heedful of the qualities of the mind:
	This is the highest protection.

Respect, humility,
contentment, gratitude,
hearing the Dhamma on timely occasions:
	This is the highest protection.

Patience, compliance,
seeing contemplatives,
discussing the Dhamma on timely occasions:
	This is the highest protection.

Austerity, celibacy,
seeing the Noble Truths,
realizing Unbinding:
	This is the highest protection.

A mind that, when touched
by the ways of the world,
is unshaken, sorrowless, dustless, at rest:
	This is the highest protection.

Everywhere undefeated
when acting in this way,
people go everywhere in well-being:
	This is their highest protection.

Nhiều Thi�n nh�n v� Người,
Suy nghĩ đến điềm l�nh,
Mong ước v� đợi chờ,
Một nếp sống an to�n,
Xin Ng�i h�y n�i l�n
Về điềm l�nh tối thượng.

Thế T�n:

Kh�ng th�n cận kẻ ngu,
Nhưng gần gũi bậc tr�,
�ảnh lễ người đ�ng lễ
L� điềm l�nh tối thượng.

Ở tr� xứ th�ch hợp,
C�ng đức trước đ� l�m,
Ch�n ch�nh hướng tụ t�m,
L� điều l�nh tối thượng.

Học nhiều, nghề nghiệp giỏi,
Kh�o huấn luyện học tập,
N�i những lời kh�o n�i
L� điềm l�nh tối thượng.

Hiếu dưỡng mẹ v� cha,
Nu�i dưỡng vợ v� con,
L�m nghề kh�ng rắc rối
L� điềm l�nh tối thượng.

Bố th�, h�nh đ�ng ph�p,
Săn s�c c�c b� con,
L�m nghiệp kh�ng lỗi lầm
L� điềm l�nh tối thượng.

Chấm dứt, từ bỏ �c,
Chế ngự đam m� rượu,
Trong ph�p, kh�ng ph�ng dật
L� điềm l�nh tối thượng.

K�nh lễ v� hạ m�nh,
Biết đủ v� biết ơn,
��ng thời, nghe Ch�nh ph�p
L� điềm l�nh tối thượng.

Nhẫn nhục, lời h�a nh�,
Yết kiến c�c Sa-m�n,
��ng thời, đ�m luận ph�p,
L� điềm l�nh tối thượng.

Khắc khổ v� Phạm hạnh,
Thấy được l� Th�nh đế,
Gi�c ngộ quả Niết b�n
L� điềm l�nh tối thượng.

Khi x�c chạm việc đời,
T�m kh�ng động, kh�ng sầu,
Kh�ng uế nhiễm, an ổn
L� điềm l�nh tối thượng.

L�m sự việc như vậy,
Kh�ng chỗ n�o thất bại,
Khắp nơi được an to�n,
L� điềm l�nh tối thượng.
