I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying at Alavi in the haunt of the Alavaka yakkha. Then the Alavaka yakkha went to the Blessed One and on arrival said to him: "Get out, contemplative!"

Như vầy t�i nghe: Một thời Thế T�n tr� ở Alavi, tại tr� xứ của Dạ-xoa Alavaka. Rồi Dạ-xoa Alavaka đi đến Thế T�n, sau khi đến n�i với Thế T�n: - N�y Sa-m�n, h�y đi ra.

[Saying,] "All right, my friend," the Blessed One went out.

- L�nh thay, Hiền giả. Thế T�n đi ra.

"Come in, contemplative!"

- N�y Sa-m�n, h�y đi v�o.

[Saying,] "All right, my friend," the Blessed One went in.

- L�nh thay, Hiền giả. Thế T�n đi v�o.

A second time... A third time, the Alavaka yakkha said to the Blessed One, "Get out, contemplative!"

Lần thứ hai... Lần thứ ba, Dạ-xoa Alavaka n�i với Thế T�n: - N�y Sa-m�n, h�y đi ra.

[Saying,] "All right, my friend," the Blessed One went out.

- L�nh thay, Hiền giả. Thế T�n đi ra.

"Come in, contemplative!"

- N�y Sa-m�n, h�y đi v�o.

[Saying,] "All right, my friend," the Blessed One went in.

- L�nh thay, Hiền giả. Thế T�n đi v�o.

Then a fourth time, the Alavaka yakkha said to the Blessed One, "Get out, contemplative!"

Lần thứ tư, Dạ-xoa Alavaka n�i với Thế T�n: - N�y Sa-m�n, h�y đi ra.

"I won't go out, my friend. Do what you have to do."

- N�y Hiền giả, Ta sẽ kh�ng đi ra cho �ng. �ng cần g� h�y l�m?

"I will ask you a question, contemplative. If you can't answer me, I will possess your mind or rip open your heart or, grabbing you by the feet, hurl you across the Ganges."

- N�y Sa-m�n, ta sẽ hỏi Ng�i. Nếu Ng�i kh�ng trả lời cho ta, ta sẽ l�m t�m tr� Ng�i đi�n loạn, hay ta sẽ b�p n�t quả tim của Ng�i, hay nắm ch�n của Ng�i, ta sẽ quăng qua bờ s�ng b�n kia s�ng Hằng.

"My friend, I see no one in the cosmos with its devas, Maras & Brahmas, its contemplatives & priests, its royalty & commonfolk, who could possess my mind or rip open my heart or, grabbing me by the feet, hurl me across the Ganges. But nevertheless, ask me what you wish."

- N�y Hiền giả, Ta kh�ng thấy một ai trong thế giới với chư Thi�n, với �c ma v� với Phạm thi�n, trong quần ch�ng Sa-m�n, B�-la-m�n với chư Thi�n v� lo�i Người, lại c� thể l�m t�m Ta đi�n loạn, hay b�p n�t quả tim của Ta, hay nắm ch�n quăng Ta qua b�n kia bờ s�ng Hằng. Tuy vậy, n�y Hiền giả, �ng cứ hỏi như � �ng muốn.

Rồi Dạ-xoa với b�i kệ n�i với Thế T�n: Alavaka:

What	is a person's highest wealth?
What, when well-practiced, brings bliss?
What	is the highest of savors?
Living in what way
		is one's life called the best?

Ở đời, t�i sản g�,
Tối thắng cho con người?
C�i g� kh�o thực h�nh
�em lại chơn an lạc.
C�i g� trong c�c vị,
L� vị ngọt tối thượng?
Nếp sống như thế n�o,
Gọi nếp sống tối thắng?

Thế T�n:

Conviction 	is a person's highest wealth.
Dhamma, 	when well-practiced, brings bliss.
Truth is the highest of savors.
Living with discernment,
		one's life is called best.

Ở đời n�y, l�ng tin,
Tối thắng cho con người,
C�i g� kh�o thực h�nh,
�em lại chơn an lạc?
Ch�nh ph�p kh�o thực hiện,
�em lại chơn an lạc,
Sự thật trong c�c vị,
L� vị ngọt tối thượng,
Nếp sống với tr� tuệ,
L� nếp sống tối thắng.

How 		does one cross over the flood?
How 		cross over the sea?
How 		does one overcome suffering & stress?
How 		is a person purified?

Thế n�o vượt bộc lưu?
Thế n�o vượt biển lớn?
Thế n�o vượt qua khổ?
Thế n�o thật thanh tịnh?

[The Buddha:]

Thế T�n:

Through conviction	one crosses over the flood.
Through heedfulness,	the sea.
Through persistence	one overcomes
		suffering & stress.
Through discernment		a person is purified.

Với t�n, vượt bộc lưu,
Kh�ng ph�ng dật, vượt biển,
Tinh tấn, vượt đau khổ,
Với tuệ, được thanh tịnh.

Alavaka:

How 		does one gain discernment?
How 		does one find wealth?
How 		does one attain honor?
How 		bind friends to oneself?
	Passing from this world
	to
	the next world,
how		does one not grieve?

Thế n�o được tr� tuệ?
Thế n�o được t�i sản?
Thế n�o đạt danh xưng?
Thế n�o cột bạn hữu?
�ời n�y qua đời sau,
Thế n�o, chết kh�ng sầu?

[The Buddha:]

Thế T�n:

Convinced of the arahants' Dhamma
for attaining Unbinding,
— heedful, observant — 
one listening well
		gains discernment.
Doing what's fitting,
enduring burdens,
one with initiative
		finds wealth.
Through truth
		one attains honor.
Giving
		binds friends to oneself.

Endowed with these four qualities,
	— truth,
	self-control,
	stamina,
	relinquishment — 
a householder of conviction,
on passing away, doesn't grieve.

Now, go ask others,
common priests & contemplatives,
if anything better than
	truth,
	self-control,
	endurance,
	& relinquishment
here can be found.

Tin tưởng bậc La-h�n,
Tin ph�p, đạt Niết-b�n,
Kh�o nghe, được tr� tuệ,
Bậc tr�, kh�ng ph�ng dật.

L�m th�ch đ�ng tr�ch nhiệm,
Phấn đấu được t�i sản,
Với sự thật được danh,
Bố th� cột bạn b�.

Ai l� người gia chủ,
Tin tưởng bốn ph�p n�y,
Sự thật v� Ch�nh ph�p,
Ki�n tr� v� bố th�,
Vị ấy sau khi chết,
Nhất định kh�ng sầu muộn.

H�y hỏi c�c vị kh�c,
Sa-m�n, B�-la-m�n,
Nếu c� ph�p n�o kh�c
Ở đời, lại thắng hơn,
Sự thật v� nhiếp phục,
Bố th� v� kham nhẫn?

Alavaka:

How could I go ask
common priests & contemplatives? — 
now that today I understand
	what benefits
	the next life.

It was truly for my well-being
that the Awakened One came
	to stay in Alavi.
Today I understand
where what is given
bears great fruit.

I will wander from village to village,
		town to town,
paying homage		to the Self-awakened One
& the true rightness	of the Dhamma. 	

Sao nay con rộng hỏi,
Sa-m�n, B�-la-m�n,
Nay con được r� biết,
Hiện, vị lai hạnh ph�c.

V� hạnh ph�c cho con,
Mong rằng bậc Gi�c Ngộ,
H�y đi đến an tr�,
Tại xứ Alavi.
Nay con đ� r� biết.
Chỗ n�o th�, quả lớn.

Con sẽ đi bộ h�nh,
L�ng n�y qua l�ng kh�c,
Th�nh n�y qua th�nh kh�c,
�ảnh lễ bậc Gi�c Ngộ,
�ảnh lễ thiện ph�p t�nh
Của Ch�nh ph�p vi diệu.
