I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying in Savatthi at the Eastern Monastery, the palace of Migara's mother. Now at that time a dear and beloved grandson of Visakha, Migara's mother, had died. So Visakha, Migara's mother — her clothes wet, her hair wet — went to the Blessed One in the middle of the day and, on arrival, having bowed down to him, sat to one side. As she was sitting there the Blessed One said to her: "Why have you come here, Visakha — your clothes wet, your hair wet — in the middle of the day?"

Như vầy t�i nghe: Một thời Thế T�n tr� ở S�vatthi, tại ��ng Vi�n, Lộc Mẫu giảng đường. L�c bấy giờ, người ch�u trai của Vis�kh� mẹ của Mig�ra khả �i v� dễ thương bị mệnh chung. V� Vis�kh� mẹ của Mig�ra, với �o đẫm ướt, với t�c đẫm ướt, thật s�ng sớm đi đến Thế T�n, sau khi đến, đảnh lễ Thế T�n, rồi ngồi xuống một b�n. Thế T�n n�i với Vis�kh�, mẹ của Mig�ra, đang ngồi một b�n: - N�y Vis�kh�, B� từ đ�u đến, với �o ướt đẫm, với t�c đẫm ướt, đi đến đ�y qu� sớm như vậy?

When this was said, she said to the Blessed One, "My dear and beloved grandson has died. This is why I have come here — my clothes wet, my hair wet — in the middle of the day."

- Bạch Thế T�n, đứa ch�u khả �i dễ thương của con đ� mệnh chung. Cho n�n con, với �o đẫm ướt, với t�c đẫm ướt, con đến đ�y s�ng sớm như vậy.

"Visakha, would you like to have as many children and grandchildren as there are people in Savatthi?"

- N�y Vis�kh�, B� c� muốn tất cả người ở S�vatthi l� con v� l� ch�u của B� kh�ng?

"Yes, lord, I would like to have as many children and grandchildren as there are people in Savatthi."

- Bạch Thế T�n, con muốn tất cả người ở S�vatthi l� con v� ch�u của con.

"But how many people in Savatthi die in the course of a day?"

- Nhưng n�y Vis�kh�, c� bao nhi�u người ở S�vatthi mạng chung h�ng ng�y?

"Sometimes ten people die in Savatthi in the course of a day, sometimes nine... eight... seven... six... five... four... three... two... Sometimes one person dies in Savatthi in the course of a day. Savatthi is never free from people dying."

- Bạch Thế T�n, c� mười người ở S�vatthi mạng chung h�ng ng�y, ch�n... t�m... bảy.. s�u... năm... bốn... ba.. hai. Bạch Thế T�n c� một người ở S�vatthi mạng chung h�ng ng�y. Bạch Thế T�n, S�vatthi kh�ng c� tho�t được số người bị chết!

"So what do you think, Visakha: Would you ever be free from wet clothes and wet hair?"

- B� nghĩ thế n�o, n�y Vis�kh�? Như vậy B� c� khi n�o được khỏi vải bị ướt, hay t�c khỏi bị ướt kh�ng?

"No, lord. Enough of my having as many children and grandchildren as there are people in Savatthi."

- Thưa kh�ng, bạch Thế T�n! Thật l� vừa đủ cho con, bạch Thế T�n, số nhiều như vậy về con v� về ch�u!

"Visakha, those who have a hundred dear ones have a hundred sufferings. Those who have ninety dear ones have ninety sufferings. Those who have eighty... seventy... sixty... fifty... forty... thirty... twenty... ten... nine... eight... seven... six... five... four... three... two... Those who have one dear one have one suffering. For those with no dear ones, there are no sufferings. They are free from sorrow, free from stain, free from lamentation, I tell you."

- N�y Vis�kh�, những ai c� một trăm người th�n y�u, những người ấy c� trăm sự đau khổ! Những ai c� ch�n mươi người th�n y�u, những người ấy c� ch�n mươi sự đau khổ! Những ai c� t�m mươi người th�n y�u, những người ấy c� t�m mươi sự đau khổ! Những ai c� bảy mươi.. c� s�u mươi... c� năm mươi... c� bốn mươi... c� ba mươi.. c� hai mươi... c� mười.. c� ch�n... c� t�m... c� bảy..c� s�u.. c� năm... c� bốn... c� ba... c� hai... c� một người th�n y�u, những người ấy c� một sự đau khổ. Những ai kh�ng c� người th�n y�u, những người ấy kh�ng c� sự đau khổ. Ta n�i rằng họ l� người kh�ng c� sầu, kh�ng c� tham đắm, kh�ng c� ưu n�o.

Then, on realizing the significance of that, the Blessed One on that occasion exclaimed:

Rồi Thế T�n, sau khi hiểu biết � nghĩa n�y, ngay trong l�c ấy, n�i l�n lời cảm hứng:

The sorrows, lamentations,
the many kinds of suffering in the world,
exist dependent on something dear.
	They don't exist
	when there's nothing dear.
And thus blissful & sorrowless
are those for whom nothing
in the world is dear anywhere.
So one who aspires
to be stainless & sorrowless
shouldn't make anything
in the world dear
	anywhere.

Sầu, than v� đau khổ,
Sai biệt c� ở đời,
Duy�n th�n �i, ch�ng c�,
Kh�ng th�n �i, ch�ng kh�ng,
Do vậy, người an lạc,
Người kh�ng c� sầu muộn,
L� những ai ở đời,
Kh�ng c� người th�n �i,
Do vậy ai tha thiết,
�ược kh�ng sầu, kh�ng tham,
Chớ l�m th�n l�m �i,
Với một ai ở đời.
